RE: Would you hunt from this?
ORIGINAL: Ryan Campbell In deep south Texas and Mexico that type of rig is very common. And you cant chase them down and corner them into a fence. Mostly because you cant drive one of those very fast. Also because the ranches are 20,000 + acres and that's a small one. In mexico they'd look at you and ask "whats a fence?" I've hunted out of a rig like that on a ranch that is54,000acres and low fenced. We shot hogs and coyotes of it. We saw a lot of deer but for the life of me I can't remember a single time that we ran one down and shot it with a spot light. The primary reason for the rig is so you can see over the extremely thick brush. Let not your ignorance cause judgement on a topic when you know not of which you speak. |
RE: Would you hunt from this?
I was down in South Texas(San Antonio) for 3 weeks in 2001. I saw many of these while cruisen the country. They all weren't mounted on new trucks either. As some have already stated the ranches down there are HUGE. Some of these ranches are as big/bigger that the county I live in!
I can't see how one would hunt that area effectively unless you built 100+ deer stands at a cost well beyond what a truck mounted hydraulic manlift would cost. The deer stands/towers I did see were as high as some buildings around here. If you got the bucks - Go For It. I just can't see anything unethical about hunting out of one of these vehicles vs some of the "Club Houses" some guys call deer stands. |
RE: Would you hunt from this?
Heck, even if I wanted to hunt with that thing, I couldn't get it back to where I hunt. Can just barely get a ATV to my lease.

RE: Would you hunt from this?
I Love That SETUP......:D:D:DAWSOME.
In British Columbia its unlawful to shoot from a vehicle... One has to outside the vehicle before a shot is taken........This would probably constituteas shooting from one.... Personally I don't see the big deal in hunting from this setup... Not my hunting style but I'm not a farmer, rancher nor do I live in the flat open prairies...... No diff than some other methods that are used elsewhere.. Give the guy some credit he is an idealist....He has found a loophole in the hunting laws and ethics.. But until that law is stated and a defination declared its O.K. Esecially if I was a farmer and deer where deer have a detramental affect my annual crop harvest....Any advantage I could get I would take... |
RE: Would you hunt from this?
I don't see it as any different than hunting out of any other box blind especially if it's parked. If it's moving than that is a little different but I still see no problem with it so long as it's legal in the state that you hunt in.

Pretty much the only way to get around, at least on my lease is by way of caliche roads criss crossing the ranch. Like they say everyting in south texas either bites, stings or has a sticker. Some people on this forum just think they are so damn high and mighty that they gotta go accusing others of being un ethical when they do not take into consideration the terrain, vegetation, and situation of other hunters in other parts of the country. Anyways not my prefered method but yes id hunt out of that high rack. |
RE: Would you hunt from this?
I personally wouldn't use that particular "stand" because our ATV's couldn't pull that much weight back into the woods.

RE: Would you hunt from this?
ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog Tex, in the FL reg's it states that no hunting from a vehicle whilein motion or swiming deer enen if the boat is standing still. In over 50yrs of hunting, I have never hunted in a private enclosed area and never shined for deer. Yes I hunt from one of these, I have a 88 Blazer Tahoe with a shooting stand on it. With the palmetto's we have here hogs and deer can't see the Blazer, but I can see them. The states up north and out west are different than the Southern states when it comes to theterrain in which we hunt. Different strokes for different folks! [/align] |
RE: Would you hunt from this?
NT, In Texas its perfectly legal to hunt from a vehicle as long as you are on private property....My daughter went on a youth hunt on the King ranch a few years back and thats the way all the kids hunted (from trucks) 12 kids, 12 bucks smallest was 97 inches and largest was 137 inches all in one day, all cull bucks that were over 5.5 years old...
