Default Difference?

Heya folks!

Ok am new to this and i have narrowed down my choice for my first rifle to the Remington Model 700 BDL 7mm. But I was wondering what the difference is between the 7mm mag and the 7mm ultra mag. Any help appreciated!

The 7mm ultra mag is just more powder and thus more velocity (about 250 fps more with 140 grain bullet). Not worth it in my opinion. If the 7mm Rem mag isn't enough then go up in caliber (300 Win mag or 338 Win mag). Not to mention that the ammo for the ultra mag will be hard to find (unless you plan on handloading). Just my .02

The ultra-mag or short mag (Winchester) version of any cartridgehas a shorter but wider body. The ballistics are vertually the same. The cartridge can be fired from a rifle with a shorter action. A shorter action seems to have inherently better accuracy.

The 7mm mag is a perfect deer gun. The 7mm ultra mag is a perfect elephant gun. maybe not that bad but the ultra mag is a big gun. My brother went from a 243 to a 7mm ultra mag and he loves it. He never has to look for his deer. I love a 270 for deer. Lots of stores have the ultra mag ammo now they just cost $55 a box.
