Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Since I hunt New England, mostly Maine/NH, we don't seem to have the deer numbers other states/province have.
If I hunt for a week straight, I'll probably average seeing deer 2-3 days at best. I know friends that have hunted an entire season and not seen a single deer. For those folks that see deer every time they go out, does seeing, hunting deer lose anything? I guess what I'm saying, to us, it can be a big deal even seeing a young doe. |

Jimmy, you're missing all the fun Bro, come on down!
We kill Doe's just for breakfest, the Buck's for the racks.:D:D |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Rebel..Thanks buddy!
I wouldn't know what to do if I saw deer every day... |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Jimmy I hunt NH mostly and seeing 3-5 a year is a good year.
I also go to PA for a week in bow season. When we started down there we would see 8-10 a day at least. Now its more like NH :( anyway, no it doesn't get old, its fun watching the deer interact. It was nothing to have 5-10 deer around you at a time. It is very educational to watch them interact and very challenging to get off a shot with that many there. Its fun! |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Yes, it does. This year to make it more exciting my neighbor (Baldman on this forum) and I are hunting with muzzle loaders. It's just too easy with a modern centerfire rifle.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I can speak to this I think. I grew up hunting in Vermont and was in the same boat as the other New Englanders. I would see 2-3 deer per week of hunting, and would only see one buck on average every 2 years, and they were mostly yearlings. I think I have only seen 2x bucks in my life in Vermont that were not yearlings and they were 2 year olds at best, and that is out of 8 seasons in Vermont. I have refined my hunting skills a lot since I was a kid, so during Vermont seasons I now see 1-2 deer per day on average, but maybe only one buck per week of hunting at most and they are still almost all 18 month bucks.
When in PA, I see an average of 5-10 deer per day, usually a half dozen 18-36 month old bucks per season (average 5-10 days per year) and average seeing 1x 3 1/2 year buck per season. I end up tagging a doe every year in PA, and usually end up with a shot at a 3 1/2 year buck every 2-3 years. I enjoy seeing that many deer, there are many times that I have a doe tag and don't shoot at them because I just don't feel like it and enjoy watching them instead, I do this because I know if I put the time in I will get a shot at one later in the season. I enjoy the hunting much more in PA than I do in Vermont but I will always continue to hunt in VT because of being in the woods I grew up in and being with good people. The hunting does not get old or boring when I see more deer, the opposite is probably true for me. |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
No it doesnt ever get old. I finally found a spot where i would see an average of about 8-11 deer a night. Although some of the same deer would come back on back to back nights. It gave me something to watch until the buck comes. Plus knowing all those deer are there means a buck is too. I love watching them and it excites me every time i get the chance to watch.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Yes and no. I hunt some places where there are tons of deer. I still don't think I see one EVERY time out. But to shoot a doe during an entire season, it's really not that big a deal. BUT there are some years where even though there are deer all over, I am still working hard to get that doe.
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I'll tell you if it gets "Old" when I find a spot with that many deer.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Where I hunt it is strange to not see 20 or more deer every day. Sometimes many more than that. Last Fall I had eight Mule deer tags and filled them all. By the time I got the last one proccessed I was sort of tired of seeing deer. However I will be chomping at the bit come next season. When you see that many, it comes down to picking the biggest doe or waiting for the right Buck which I don't do because I am not a trophy hunter at all. I am in it for the meat and I always enjoy another day in the field.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
i agree with jimmy on wondering if it would get old. where i hunt if you see 3 deer in the season then you got lucky. very rarily do we see a lot of deer(i think alot of it is from poaching around there though). the first and only deer i saw last season ended up bein on our kitchen table.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
You gott to be kidding. Hearihg first then seeing 50 or 75 deer coming thru the thicket is exciting. Use to be that way 40 years ago. Now it is 3 to 5 a week
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I think it's all what you make it!
When I started hunting the deer were not nearly as plentiful as they are today, we often hunted deer at the same time as moose in the forest when I was younger and I recall the first year I saw more moose than deer (5 moose and 2 deer both ended up in the freezer in 4 days of hunting...lol:D). Now if you hunt a week for moose and see 2-5 you have a great spot, if you hunt a week in most places for deer seeing anything less than double digits a day is SLOW. However i can say I have more vigor for hunting now then when I was 12 - 15. I have just changed the way I look at hunting as whole, for me it is a 12 month a year sport. The real icing on the cake is friendships, nature, peace, personal conquests and just maybe a opportunity to notch a tag....hum funny how that part is exactly the same as when I was younger. I will say the additional population has led to more opportunity to hunt longer season and slightly larger bag limits. It also does help when introducing others to the sport in some ways but I also fear that those who maybe just deer hunt now and do not have to endure aren't really putting the right emphasis on what hunting means "aka; The real icing on the cake is friendships, nature, peace, personal conquests and just maybe a opportunity to notch a tag"! Guess time will tell but if it ever gets old to this dog...I's have a better golf game and probably a happier wife (ok she is great but still when you live and breath it even the great one can sometimes complain..even though she loves how I feel for this great sport):D |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
no it dont get old... the last few years in PA on public land has been hard.. seeing 2-10 deer a season.. so i would rather see a lot of deer than see than not see much at all... but its still better than working..;)
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I see anywhere from 5 to 25 whitetail deer per day hunting in Alberta and Saskatchewan. When hunting mule deer that number ranges from 20 to 50 per day.My challenge is not to kill a deer but to kill a large antlered mature buck.If the goal was simply to kill a legal deer the hunt would end the first morning.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
i wish i could tell you...... haha i wish i just got bored sittin there watching deer walk all over me.....O THE DAY!!!

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Here in Southern Michigan, deer are everywhere. I see 20-30 in the fields I hunt heading to work. It does make my work attendance spotty during hunting season. It never gets old seeing deer. Most of the reason I love to hunt so much, is just being out there in the woods and among the animals. Seeing 10 - 20 deer within 30 yards of your stand, not spooked, is extremely enjoyable. Whether I decide to harvest one of the animals or not, it makes the time in the stand a lot of fun and I always have a big smile on my face for the rest of the day. :D
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Some days hunting in Arkansas and Texas, I'll see 8-10 deer, some days none. It never gets old for me, even on the days where I don't see any. I love just watching animals on some days or just relaxing not being in the office, no phone, no wife, no kids, just me and nature.:D
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I see deer just about everytime I go out here in PA and trust me when I see on that I want to pull that string back or put those cross hairs on, the old heart is beating a mile a minute...

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Around my home range, I'll see an average of 5-6 deer per day, and I always considered that to be a sparse deer environment. I'm bemused to hear that so many of you have it even worse.
Of course, one week each year I venture across the state (MT) and then I really see the deer. I've been hunting there for three years now, and have never actually spent the entire allotted week because I have always filled my tags by then. In that country, I have seen as many as 13 whitetail bucks between dawn and 8 AM. I'd go kick the dog (actually the hotel guy's dog) if I saw fewer than 2 bucks in a day. Oh yeah, I don't count mule deer over there, if I did the counts would double. That's some fun hunting, and no I haven't gotten tired of it yet. I mean, I watch three or four bucks tend scrapes each year. I see a fight or two, and I even saw a buck breed a doe (don't read that last bit if you're under 18). It's like a nature show, all day long. A typical day on stand would be 15 whitetails - 6 bucks, 20 muleys - 5 bucks, half a dozen coyotes, a dozen or so pheasants, and about 20,000 geese overhead (I tried to count one day and estimated 25,000). How could that possibly get boring? |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I didn't realize that in the northeast the deer numbers were so sparse. What factors contribute to this? Old growth forests with little food to offer? snow levels?
Thanks I never get bored hunting. Cold, hot, tired, sweaty, anxious, and excited, but not bored. Probably see a few more animals than you guys from the north east. Observing the workings of nature can never get old. Dealing with humans---that can get old. hb |
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I thought it was sparse in South Florida, but it isn't as bad as all that. I might only see 3 to 5 shooters in a season, but I usually see 3 to 5 does a day. We can't shoot does down here so they are only for entertainment. But I enjoy watching any kind of deer do what deer do.
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Well I don't hunt in one of those places that full of deer, but I have shot a lot. While it don't exactly get old, you'll find yourself wanting to get closer. ;)
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
My friend had a doe tag a few years back and saw a nice 8 mount a doe at about 30 yards. At least he had the decency to wait till the buck "finished" before he blistered em both.
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I guess if I ever get to the point where I'm tired of seeing deer, it's time to find a new sport.:D
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
We aren’t as fortunate in seeing an abundance of deer where we hunt. Some year are better then others but in general we are lucky if we see 2 or 3 deer a day and that would be a very good day. I would have to say that seeing plenty of deer during hunting season would not get old but interesting. The day that it gets old would be the day I would pack it in.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
hunting will never get old for me i see a good amount of deer myself

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
well i dont know about the rest of the Nth east but for PA, we started a deer management plan a few years ago.. and as you can tell just on this post PA has a lot of hot and cold areas.. the hot spots are mostly around the 2 big cities and also private land in the state that doesnt have many hunters hunting it.. the good thing about PA is we have a lot of public land to hunt than most states, but when the plan started the does got hit really hard in some areas so its really tough hunting.. put that w/ the things you have stated like some areas that need timbered and sometimes the snow and w/ one million hunters in PA alone, it tends to hurt the herd in a lot of areas.. but then there are areas around pittsburgh or some private farm land that people see 100 deer a day.. so its pretty crazy here..

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
A couple times last year I had a herd of atleast 20 deer come through no problem, and everytime we went down south, we saw atleast 6 deer a piece (3-5 of us). always early morning to around noon hunts, and last year, only time we didnt bring back deer was during bow season, ended up taking I think 9 deer, 1 buck, 8 does. the buck was a spike that i missed during bow...also, My father had shots on 6 different 6pts+ with atleast 2 being big 8-10ptrs...we wont get into that story though.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
When deer hunting in my area, It is very rare to be out day and not see a deer. I dont know if that has actually happened to me in a full days hunt. But NO it never gets old! I love seeing deer and hunting them!
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
I live in north Alabama where we can take a buck a day EVERY day from October 20th until January 31rst ... they say we have about 30 deer per square mile in my county ...UNTIL deer season starts then it seems about 1 deer per square mile ... seriously we do see a lot of deer here but the doe to buck ratio sucks so we do not see a lot of shooter bucks...so it never really gets boring here because we are always hunting for a mature buck ....

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
It would never get old for me. I have had awesome luck and harvesting many deer. I get just as excited still when I see a Doe, Fawn, Spike or a hog. I see deer most everyday of the year. Never gets old! It's in the blood. The only difference now is I can control my nerves for the most part. It's after the shot I fall apart THANK GOD. Or I would never pull it off.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
For me it never gets old!! I love seeing deer and watching their behavior. Seems like I see something different and learn something new everytime out. Its great!! We are blessed here in MO in the areas I hunt with healthy deer herd numbers. Some areas 20+ deer in a evening is not uncommon on a single field. Most areas you are guarnteed sightings everytime out. However with great # doesn't mean you can just sit anywhere and be on deer. If you don't pick the right trails and transition spots you get skunked.

RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
Hey Jimmy S. It used to be like that in Putnam County, WV back in the late 60's but not any more. I see deer every day I'm in the woods and usually take 5 to 7 a season. Back when I first started deer hunting I was lucky to see that many does in a season and I hunted for 5 years before I finally saw a buck. I enjoy watching deer while in my stand and by seeing so many it helps me to be more selective when I have tags to fill.
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
well, when you see deer, and you still have a tag for them, its all right. like if im sitting in the woods, and i see a whole bunch of does, its pretty cool, but after i shoot one of em, and fill my tag, seeing them kinda gets old. usually by the last day, im begging my dad to let me fill his tag too, just cuz im so bored of seeing them. :D
|
RE: Does it ever get "Old" hunting where there are tons of deer?
It will never get old seeing deer, but it is hard sometimes when your hunting a certain buck trying not to get winded by other deer. If you spook one it can wreck the whole hunt.
