I don't know what's happening around the rest of the country - but SE Iowa is in the middle of what I call a "velvet rut" right now! It's getting crazy down here!

I am having a hard time getting good velvet footage this year bacause almost all of our hunting ground is surrounded with CORN. With the high corn prices and the lack of corn from the floods, everyone seems to be planting corn, and to get great velvet footage, one needs to have beans. Even the alfalfa is not producing any good velvet.

Hey Guys,

I have been out about ever other night around home here (WI) and have had limited sucess and I have about 6 bean fields to watch. I got close toa 150-160 he was closing the gap down a field road buthe decided to go to the corn at about 400 yds. I cant really believe how hard it has been to get trail pics as well as velvet footage this year. Going to keep pluggin away!

Yeah man, just because you hunt good ground with nice bucks doesn't mean you will get trail cam pics, velvet footage, or kill them. It's VERY difficult to capture any nice buck regardless of the time of year, where you are, etc... Time is the only leverage you have on whitetails.

I've sat out probably 15 nights in the last few weeks. I've yet to capture a mature buck on film. Lot's of close encounters with all sorts of deer, but it is REALLY tough to catch one of these dudes with their guard down!

Putting the full ocurt press on this weekend, sounds like we wil have some cool weather coming in the next few days. Hoping that it will change their movements a bit.
