Sony DVD108?

Made a post about this in the Bowhunting contest forum and a member suggest I make it here also since you guys have some good data and know alot about this market. Rob/PABowyer and a few others have endorsed Sony and I like them also. Any feedback would be great!

With that said I have been wanting to get into filming my hunts for a while. Surprised at how hard it is to find people that know much about Camcorders. All the people that I know that have one cant give good feedback on what and why they bought it. SO this is what I am looking at right now. I am not looking for something top of the line, but want to be able to put Videos on the net and watch on TV that looks OK. Does anyone have any feed back on this camera? About the only consensus I can find is Sony has better low light then most. Any help on this is much appreciated. Thanks Guys!

Hotburn76, I can't tell you much about the DVD but I know we use the Sony handi cam as our secondary camera!! It is a mini dv which is all we use so it can be edited!! It also has great low light capabilties and for what you are looking for just takeing some good hunting footage for home you just might want to look at it.. You never know while hunting maybe you shoot and video the next world record and then you have the tape which can be edited and can be put onto DVD.. My hunting buddy Steve just bought a DVD burner from Sony that burns your tapes right from the camera. If you went with a Sony handi cam and a burner you would only have about $450 in both!!Good luck filming this year it's really addicting!! Walt

Thanks stickbow26. So the DVD ones are not able to be edited at all or is it to complicated? I figured with a computer the DVD versions would be easier to edit with the basic software. Do you mean more easy to edit in the field?

Hotburn sorry it took so long I am having problems being able to post!! I don't know much about editing maybe Todd can help with that. I know the mini dv tapes are what everyone is useing unless you go to HD, If you have the mini tapes you can burn them easy to DVD or just play them on your tv from your camera. As far as editing you have to ask Todd or Kyle!! Walt

Stick with the Mini DV format as this is what everyone uses and I believe it has something to do with the editing process (why Mini DV is better). I'm no technical expert when it comes to the cameras, I just know everyone in the hunting industry uses Mini DV.

stickbow26 what software do you use for editing video on your sony handicam. We have the dvd version and it seems to be difficult to edit with a few different softwares. Are we better off getting a new MiniDV rather than the dvd version. I figured you probably have some good experience and might be able to help. Thanks.

RE: Sony DVD108?

Well guys this is what I did, struggling but this is where I am. Now some of you recommended the MiniDV, which is the ultra small DV tapes. A few of you said the DVD which is actually the Mini DVDs, the three inch ones. Well I went to a couple of the electronic stores and could not find a salesman willing to talk me into the MiniDV. They said the DVD was the way to go unless I wanted to spend the money and go with Hard Drive. They said the MiniDV would be fading out soon with the HD coming into play, but the DVD will be around for a while. So I compared the two. MiniDV can go one hour, so can DVD. MiniDV can edit in camera, so can DVD with DVD+RW disk. MiniDV has slightly higher quality, which you lose when you burn to a DVD disk, so no advantage to me. So I get the Sony DVD108. Then the fun starts.

The Camera comes with easy software to get the files onto your computer, no problem. But when I tried to get it onto YouTube I was very upset. The Sony Software does not even go into this. Probably would deserve a book on its own. There is a program on all Windows XP and newer computers called Movie Maker, but it only works with memory cards and, you guessed it MiniDV!! So at this point I am starting to slip into self doubt mode! So I had to go out and buy software to get the files compressed for the internet, cost fifty bucks, and the sky is the limit on price for that stuff, some go for 800 and up!

So to sum it up, from what I can tell the MiniDV would have been much more user friendly at first to get started. I was about ready to chuck the camera and the laptop out the window yesterday. So now I can work my software so I am ok now. My main concern with the MiniDV was I did not want to be dependent on hooking up my camera directly to the computer to always get the footage off. I wanted the disk and just pop them in. I wanted to take a video and come home and put it right in my DVD player and watch. Buta person would have a easier time getting set up for the Internet with a MiniDV then the DVD from my experience.

Here is my first run with it on the YouTube site. I compressed it to much since it went from a 110 MB file down to a 17 MB file. But it still looks pretty good IMO.
