Sights you have seen while hunting...

The Topic header refers not so much to "special game" we have taken or seen, but to THINGS and PLACES we have run across. Special Scenic views, old abandoned buildings or vehicles, lost / found gravesites, Abandoned mines, homes, Meteorites, plane crash wreckage, Indian ruins etc ... I have seen lots of unusual things and some quite memorable. I will start the thread off with a couple things I have seen.

I am planning a trip back to a favorite hunt area in about amonth to scout for this season. I am adding a hike to a place where I saw plane wreckage about 7 years ago. Back then, It was a bit out of the way, as it was on the far edge of my ZONE. When I saw it across the canyon it was too far for me to get to and I was alone and in very rugged country. I recently found out that what I saw was most likely the wreckage of a miltary T38 that went down in the 1967. My source says most of the wreckage is still there.

I also ran across a couple of small graveyards in 2 different areas of the state.(AZ) I Did some research on the names at one site using public geneology records on the net and determined the one site was a family involved in mining in the area. Died in the 20's and have been buried on a small hill in-between 2 washes ever since. Lots of expense went into the sites, wroght iron fences and beautiful headstones. Quite overgrown now, but You just have to wonder!?!?!?!

I've Also seen several wrecked vehicles and they were so far from any road that they just almost had to be dropped in from the sky!

Okay, now it is your turn! Lets hear some better stories of what you found while hunting or hiking. I am sure there are a few good ones we would all like to hear about!

I don't know what kind of silo it is (nuclear or what) but there is a military silo off of a forest road way back off the main highway in the Umtanum GMU in WA. There is an old fence around it -dome shaped with shrub growth over the sides. It's a pretty big silo - mostly underground - I think??????? I didn't hang out too much - I was busy trying to kill an elk I never saw.....

Saw this gal last year when I was on a bow Safari in South Africa. If it is a little small then go the following web page I put together.

We also hunt in a area where a plane crashed years ago, it was a small personal aircraft with 7 people on it non of them survived it. My husbands family was bowhunting at the time that it happen and was some of the first people to arrive.

There is lots of old mines around here and lots of caves that I dont dare explore!

probably the dumbest thing ive ever layed eye's on while hunting was another bowhunter shooting from the back of his truck..Yep I confronted the guy then called the game warden. Enough evidence to take him to court they said!

There's a grave that is marked on my 7.5 USGS quad, the wife and I went to find it one day. We did a little driving and found it, there was a small pile of rocks, a small cross made out of sticks with bailing wire. And a small crudely made head stone that read " A white womans grave". After flagging down some forest service people we got the story behind this lady. Turns out there was a wagon train headed back from Tacoma, after getting yearly supplies and headed back to Ellensberg, when this woman was struck by lightning. And that is where she was buried. Although not really found while hunting it is in the area I hunt and found it kinda sad, that all this person has to remembered by is a small head stone that reads " a white womans grave", no name no date. Then there are the beer cans I find clear an gone, back in bung frick Egypt. I just about kill myself packing the gear I need to hunt elk, let alone a beer for the road. I come to the conclusion that some SOB is flying about in his plane tossing back some cold ones and chucking the cans out the window. Because knowone in there right mind would be walking back in these places just to drink a beer.....well at least I hope not?

Wow, Once a few people added to this list it jsut took off!
Lots of cool things too.
One more I ran across, is marked on a map, but I just had to see what it was. It was called ROCK HOUSE and it really was. Since it was on the early 1900 survey map, I guess it was a line shack or some such shelter. Buried deep in the tope end of a small ravine, nowhere near a road or trail, ans smack dab in the middle of indian teritory form the 1800s. Amazingly it was still mostly standing.
One other thing was on a small plateau on the edge of a deep canyon. Year round water and not 5 minutes driving of I17 there is a spot that looked like a deer blind. Built up all around this plateau was a rock wall. Mostly flat shale typ rocks, with no mortar. Just so many and it was soo large that it may have been an indian dwelling form years ago.

Anyone care to add more things to the list...

In the California desert I've looked down into a verticle mine shaft and seen the end of a pick up truck. I couldn't get close enough to the edge to see details, I don't know if the truck is resting on the bottom of the shaft or if it's lodged part way down.

In another part of the desert there is the wreck of a civilian twin engine plane. All the instruments and engines are gone from it. It's on a hillside approaching an old army emergency airfield so I don't know if it was trying to make a landing and hit the hill top or what.

Just about every time I go into the bushes I find balloons. All those balloons that get released at sporting events and weddings and stuff have to somewhere. I don't think people realize they're just throwing their trash into the sky for it to come down later... kind of a sore spot for me since I find so many.

The 3 most memoral things I have seen and experienced since the opener of Dove and Grouse season on September 1st. here in Washington was:
#1) Dez Young and his dogs Hank and Dash!
I even got a real HUG from Dez which happends to be the nicest person you'll ever meet in the upland bird hunting scene! He visited Cooke Canyon Hunt Club on Tuesday the 17th of Sept. to do an episode with "Hank" and his pup "Dash" up in the hills out the Kittitas Valley on 5000 acers of club grounds. The show will air sometime in January 2003 and will be about a hunt for Chukar Partidge, Pheasants and Bobwhite Quail.
#2) Like Cliff N Dee mentioned in an earlier post about truck hunting bow hunters, I was hunting Grouse in the Nanuam unit (328) and every bow hunter we saw out after Early Archery Elk were sitting in canvas chairs riding in the back of Pickup trucks as the designated driver drove the logging roads! My bird hunting partner had to comment on how they were fully dressed up in Camo outfits while riding in the back of these trucks too! Ha Ha Ha! It really ceses to amaze me on how damn lazy these so-called hunters are and what lenghts they are not willing to go just to find an honest Elk! We had been pounding the brush all day with tthe pointing dog after Grouse and seen more Elk sign IN THE WOODS that hot day than they had ever seen in a lifetime in the easy chair!
#3)I saw a Wild Turkey and a Mule Deer doe up off the road while traveling to a Grouse spot that were bedded down right near each other. This was a unique sight indeed and got it on video.
I am always thrilled to see nature at its best and relish every moment of what I encounter.

While deer hunting, I once saw a doe chasing a coyote! She chased him quickly down a canyon across from me and kept in hot pursuit for several minutes. After careful consideration, and glassing the area for other game, (bucks) I popped the coyote and the doe just stopped in her tracks, went over to the coyote and smelled it. Then pushed it with her feet, and then after a few minutes she trotted off up the hill. Wierd EH???
The coyote pelt was worth a 20 dollar bill at the time, so we sort of helped eaach other out on the deal.

C'mon folks, there have got to be some better sights out there. Anyone admit to UFO's or something?

The truck down the mineshaft from the previous posting is pretty cool.
