Competitive or Target Shooting?

This may be a sacriligious question or request, but my interests are being drawn toward competitive shooting and away from hunting. Couple of questions: What kind of activities are avilable in the Rockies? Wnat kind of rifle should I be considering? I know these are general questions, but any ideas will be considered. Thanks.

Cordite, Why do you have to choose one over the other? I shoot competitive 3-D (archery) all year. It hones my skills for hunting. Do both if you can. I take both very seriously. As for a rifle, I can't help you a whole lot there. But I shoot tournaments with the same gear I hunt with. If you can shoot- you can shoot.

I shoot competitive Trap. I find it just as enjoyable as bird hunting, not sacriliges towards hunting at all. If you are in the Colorado Springs area there are many opportunities for competitive shooting.
