Smacked one Yesterday (pics posted)
Counting eyeguards hes a 4x6, heres the story and pics to follow.
I got to my spot early in the morning and didnt see anything so I walked through a clear cut in the next finger and here thump thump of a deer bouncing away, I only saw him for about half second but he was nice so I think he was legal, so after hunting that area for a while, I get back to my truck and start driving down the mountain about 1pm. I turn off onto a skidder road off the main gravel road to go check down a hill that looked good but as I got closer it was real thick so I changed my mind so I start heading back to my truck, as I was walking I was looking for tracks in the dirt and low and behold I found some big ol buck tracks that was coming from the thick stuff crossed in front of my truck then down another hill so I follow them and walk down the hill. It was a sage brush hill with timber all around it and you could see the road about 400 yards down on the bottom. So im sitting there in the sun just looking and glassing and see a guy go in the timber below me so im thinking he might kick something up. After awhile of not seeing anything I start heading back up to my truck. As im walking back up to my truck I happen to look to my left through some trees and see antlers sticking out of the sage brush. All I could see was his antlers. He was just bedded in the sage brush on the hill side. So I get down on a knee and got my rifle on him just waiting for him to stand. After a couple minutes he stands up and BOOM I punch him in the shoulder with my 300 mag I just bought 3 weeks ago (something is wrong with my 270). He takes off down hill toward the area the guy went to so I shoot two more times as he running and miss then he gets to the bottom and I neck shoot him and hes done. He ran to within 20 yards of the bottom road. Hes a muley/blacktail crossbreed, his rack looks like a whitetail. Counting his eyeguards hes a 4x6 and 17 ½ inches wide. ![]() ![]() |

I have been following this site for a while but have not posted. I hunt a lot in the Winthrop area and was over there for opening weekend which was very slow with a ton of people. I am heading over there tomorrow for the remainder of the season.
I read on previous posts that you also hunt that area and you were over there on opening weekend also. Did you see much? Did anyone have much luck? Next week should be better with the lower temperatures and the snow level dropping it should be good. |

Also, congratulations. That is a neat look buck, are you having it mounted? I can't tell if you saved the cape or not by the pictures.

Wamuledeer, no im not having him mounted, ya i was over in winthrop till monday, I saw a total of 5 does in 3 days hunting. Seen some in the dark driving to spots but it was slow. The place we usually go opening day that we usullay pull one or two off we never even seen a deer. theres usually does, spikes and two points running all over the place. This next week should be good over there with the weather like you said.

Sounds like you had about as much luck as we did opening weekend. Normally I see 20-30 deer a day with at least some small bucks in them. I only saw 8 does all day long on Saturday. I usually have pretty good luck over there, hopefully this upcoming week. Last year the second week I missed a large 26"+ muley with a kicker and then connected on a 19" 3 point the last morning. I still think about that missed shot.

I want to hunt the second week over there sometime. Do the bucks start moving around that second week more as more people leave.
Do you hunt in winthrop or twisp. |

Hey kirkl, congrats on the buck....My computer went down and just got it back up the other day, sorry about not being able to give any updates before the seaon. Went out today with the daughter and she missed a nice 4x4 whitetail, my fault I can just kick myself for moving from where we had been sitting. When we saw it it was stand not 40yrds from where we had just been. He was chasing some does and would not stand in one spot very long and I set her up in a bad place for to hurried of a shot.
Looks like we're going to be getting some snow just up from my place tonight. Again congrats on your buck. |

Kirk,
Yes, there were a lot fewer hunters the last week and the deer were moving quite a bit. Here is my story on my deer I took last week. Here is the muley I was able to get over in the Twisp / Winthrop area on Wednesday. I hunted hard for 5 days from dawn until dusk and was getting a little discouraged. I was away from the roads and the people 1-3 miles everyday but was only seeing does and small bucks. I was leaving from my morning hunt to try out a new area when I saw a forest service road I have never been up before. I only drove up about two miles when I looked over in the timber and saw this buck feeding with some does. I pulled over, got out of my truck, got my rifle and stepped off the dirt road and he stood there the whole time. The only shot I had was through a small hole in the trees where I could see where his front shoulder met his neck. It was only a 40 yard shot so I took it. He just flopped right over on his side. Needless to say, this was the easiest buck I have ever gotten and by far the easiest pack. I was able to back my truck right up the bank and drag him in. He is a 20" wide x 20" tall 4x4 plus eyeguards. He also has one extra point coming off of one of the bases, see picture. He has pretty decent mass, the bases are about 5". http://www.hunt101.com/img/218089.jpg http://www.hunt101.com/img/218094.jpg |
