I used to run an'06 with just plain old Remington Core-lok but may look at the Nosler Partitions or even the Accu-bonds. All good bullets and will take one out iuf ya hit him right.

Now I use a 7mm with 175 nosler partitions and well I haven't taken an Elk yet with them the really rip up a deer at the 200+ ranges.

My 2 cents

Nosler partitions, barnes X, accu-bond, Trophy bonded bear claw, Premium core lokt ultra. Those are all good bullets.

Barnes triple shock is the best elk bullet in my opinion.
With elk you want two holes for tracking purposes, unless you get REALLY lucky and they don't go anywhere.
Second would be the Nosler Partition, boringly consistent performance.
They just always work.
The Barnes will more consistently give you two holes than the partition.

Remington Core-Loks will probably do the job....You wouldn't be related to the Kruegers' I know here in Western Washington would ya, krueger? They are an elderly couple, I forget from where though. Not native, lol..Just didn't seem like a popular name.

with factory ammo in .308 win I use a 180 grain nosler partition, I recently began reloading for my .308. I'm loading a 165 grain Sierra BTHP Gameking Hopefully I'll get the chance soon to see how they do on a elk. If anyone has used it already on elk I would love to hear about it.

Remington Core-Loks
Just my 2 cents and IMO Core-Loks are horrible for Elk. Our group builds our own loads, have tried about everything and shot about every stinking caliber out there. We have also killed alot of Elk in our day and have alot of experience, etc. We have had nothing but trouble with Core-Loks on Elk, but fine with Mule Deer. I can't explain why, but they seem to fall apart. An elk rib must be a little too much for them. Just our experience and a heads up.

I would recommend Nosler Partitions, Barnes, Swifts and I'd stay away from 180 gr shooting that far with a 30-06 (you mention 350 yds). Very poor ballistics out that far and 160'ish range is just fine on Elk and you get better performance.

If you're a reloader, I'd try and get a load for the Nosler Partitions. As far as the Core-loks go, Remington has been loading them for decades and alot of game is taken with them every year. I have a good friend who carries them for elk every year and has been very successful with them. He's never had a problem and has taken many elk, so they do work. Just my $.02

You do know that at 400 yards the 06 w/ 180gr Barnes XLC is still carrying a ton of energy?

.. but it's dropping like a brick falling off a cliff

My dad and I both use Rem Express Core-Lokts in our 06. Both use 180 grain. My dad uses a soft point. I use a Pointed Soft Point. I've gotten two elk at 300+. One of them was a one-shot kill and the other went right through shoulder and he dropped in his tracks. My dad's gotten two elk as well (100-150 yds). Not sure if they were one-shots or not.

My mom uses Rem Express Core-Lokts in her 308. We try to get her to carry the other 06, but she doesn't feel as comfortable with it. She's actually gotten 3 elk (<50 yds, 150 yds twice), 1 one was a one-shot kill and the other two needed a follow up.

However, this is all we've ever used. So, I can't really compare it with other brands.

Would you say that a 160gr 7mm mag is dropping like a brick too? both the 06 and 7mm mag drop roughly 15" at the distant, seems pretty flat to me.
