Hunters in SW Washington?
 

Hello all! I am new to the forum, not new to hunting though I have not had any opportunities since leaving Oklahoma 5 years ago. I am looking for someone(s) to show me around southwest WA a bit as far as hunting goes. I currently only have a shotgun, but am working towards changing that. I enjoy hunting small game, upland birds and deer. Whitetails pretty much outnumber humans in the part of Oklahoma I grew up in, and hunting them in flat country is almost second nature. I know that it is pretty much off-season for hunting right now, but would still like to see some country, maybe some public land or some private land if you do not mind sharing secrets ;) I am a safe, responsible hunter and gun owner. I have been hunting since I was 9 years old, have taken hunter safety courses on several occasion through association with the BSA, assisted as a range officer at scout summer camps, and shot competitive 600yd and 1000yd Garand team shoots several years ago.

OK, this is starting to sound like a resume, so I'll shut up now! Mainly just looking to find "the culture" again and some places to hunt!

Yeah hang out here & keep on chattin...................people will show you around. We're all to busy(almost) with TURKEY ON THE BRAIN..............rare medical condition, a cure is coming about the 15 of Apr- May 15. Then it starts back up as soon as Elk season is over. What part of OK are you from? Theres a couple of us who are from the South or who have lived there.

I am from the NW corner of the state, minus the panhandle. North of Enid, OK and almost in KS...Bobwhite and Coyote country.

We hunted Turkey there too, but never made much fuss over it. They were a bunch of dumb, sheltered Rio Grande's that would walk up within 20 yards of even an unskilled caller with a simple homemade diaphragm. One or two quick shots of 12GA #2 shot, and it was over for Mr. Tom...and for turkey season, as the bag limit was one per season (Fall and Spring seasons). My Dad told me my turkey call sounded like someone was castrating a coyote with a spoon, but they still came to me! :)

I'll be around a while...working on filling up the gun safe again and having some fun shooting! Been going out to Clark Rifles here in Vancouver a bit lately, and a couple buddies from work bought .17HMR's to play with along with the .22's. Good cheap fun that!

Welcomw aboard, you'll like it here,what parts of the S.W Wa you living in? If your use to deer in the flat open, be ready for an overhaul on the critters. Where your at noe of them deer ever see much flat or open;). They like the brush, the thicker the better and wily. A real blast to hunt though, I've hutned all three(Whites Mulies and Blacktail) and I love hunting Blackies the best. You've probably got Elk near you and they're just as challenging as the deer if not more. As far as Turks... well down your way it's almost a Gold mine if you get into them, they're hard to find and hush mouthed out that way.

This state is great for hunting, as far as what type of terrain you want to hunt and the many species of deer elk and Turkey. Plus everything else. The only drawback is the Gov't end of it. Dumber than a post when it comes to hunting. Anyway hope you like it hear and welcome.

welcome to the board!! yea i agree blacktail are wiley and are tough to hunt sometimes. if ya lookin to hunt some flat land your best bet is to head to eastern wash. for them mulies and whitetail over there. we do most our elk and deere hunting in the mossy rock and winston creek units,find a meskers maps store and but some maps and study them a bit they seem to help me alot when hunting new country.

Well up here there not that dumb, we have merriams, rios, & easterns. Yeah I know what you mean about filling up the gun safe...................just bought a browning abolt 22-250 for yotes & other stuff.
A good friend of mine lives in Fairfax, OK not to far from where you were at.
The reason Turkey is so big is b/c I don't get to hunt much at all in the fall so this is the time I have to take care of my hunting craze.

Welcome and good luck this spring. Just get some maps from the DNR and State for public lands and start driving and calling. If you cover enough ground you'll find some turkeys. Might check with the local Game Agents and Bios, they can point you in the right direction.
