Have you ever been lost while hunting or scouting?
I have pondered this question and wondered if any of you would share what you did when you got lost in the woods or mountains while hunting or scouting? I have had both experiences happen to me, both in a blizzard, and scary. The first experience was in the mountains and I almost died, someone from a camp close to us did perish and was never found, the second one, helped me survive due to the first experience. Would you know what to do if you did get lost? If you have been lost how did you get yourself out?

RE: Have you ever been lost while hunting or scouting?
Yes I have become turned around while hunting. Once I was hunting along a ridge then I cross over the top of the ridge and was hunting back. I didn't know but the ridge had a branch off which I followed. The ridge was wooded so I could see any landmarks. I came to an open spot and found that the view was wrong so I climbed a tree and I was headed about 90 deg. in the wrong direction. It was a bright sunny day so there was no danger and when I got back to camp I told everyone I just scouted a new bowl.

As Wahunter said, "I was a might bit confused for a few hours".
I jumped on the tracks of an Elk one time, late afternoon, and snowing like crazy. I tracked it until it was to dark to see, so I turned around and headed back in what I thought was the direction I had came. The road that I had started from took a turn I wasnt aware of and went in another direction. I walked in the dark for a couple of hours, coyotes howling all around me and snowing like crazy. I had a 22 revolver with me, I shot it in a series of 3 shots until I ran out of ammo hoping one of my partners would hear it. No luck. I was about to hunker down for the night when I seen some headlights on a ridge about a mile away. I headed for those headlights and came out about a half mile from where I started. My hunting partners were out looking for me and his headlights were the ones I had seen. He said he had emptied his 9mm trying to get my attention, and I had never heard a shot because of the howling wind and snow. I was cold, wet and tired and I will admit, not looking to spend the night with the Coyotes. I was sure glad to be back at camp! :D I did have stuff in my pack to spend the night, but was not looking forward to having to do that. Stupid mistakes on my part got me into that situation. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!;) |
