X5B California, need info advice
Hello
I just drew a California X5B deer tag Oct 5-20
Never hunted this area.
Not asking for your "honey hole".
Public land access points
Campgrounds, water, RV or tent?
Roads, pickup, atv, jeep?
Places to avoid (besides the local Casino)
nearest town with supplies (gas food water)
Cell service
local butcher
Any/all advice gladly excepted and appreciated.

Congrats on the tag! X5B was my 2nd choice but I didn't get drawn. How many points did you use to get the tag? I've never hunted X5B but I did hunt X3B just North of it several years ago. Bring lots of water, maps, good glass and good hiking boots. Here's some preliminary research I did in case I drew an X5B tag. Hopefully it helps.
Public land access points?
X5B has a ton of BLM land with lots of access points. If you have a GPS mapping system like onXmaps, it's a lot easier. If not, a BLM map will show you public and private property. There's a lot of popular areas to hunt in X5B.
Campgrounds, water, RV or tent?
2 of the campgrounds I'd looked at are Dodge Reservoir (Northern part of X5B) and Ramhorn Springs (Southern part of X5B). From Dodge Reservoir, you can hunt East on BLM land all the way to the Cottonwood Mountains. From Ramhorn Springs, you can hunt BLM land off of Ramhorn/Rye Patch Road, Shinn Mountain and Peak and follow the road South to where it eventually connects with Shinn Ranch Road. There's almost a 1/2 million acres of BLM land in this area.
Ramhorn is almost 5700' elevation, has 10 spaces and 2 structures to hang bucks. Their # is 530-257-0456. Dodge Reservoir also has 10 spots and their elevation is just over 5700'. Their # is 530-257-0456.
Roads, pickup, atv, jeep?
Standard BLM "roads" which means a pickup can drive some of them, a jeep more and an ATV the most.
nearest town with supplies (gas food water)
Madeline is 30 or so miles from Ramhorn and may still have a small store/gas pump but I haven't confirmed that. Susanville is about 45 miles away and Alturas just over 60 miles. Both of them have stores, gas stations, etc.Cell service
Is pretty spotty and I wouldn't count on it.
