WY Region C mule deer
 

Me and a buddy have tags for region c this year. Going to be spending about 2 days before season and 8 days during the first half of the season. Never hunted here but heard the big horns are a place to search. First out of state trip for me. Looking for any advice on where to avoid and where to start looking. Will be hiking away from roads to glass from high points. Is it pretty open in this area? Will the bucks be high? Elevation? Anything is helpful so thanks in advance

My wife and I also drew Area C deer tags, we will be there the first week of October hunting just outside Buffalo!

Even the west side of Region C near the freeway boundary where Region Y starts is not in or really near the BigHorns. Region C is in mostly sagebush country with elevations well below what you would call in the mountains. You have to go west of Buffalo and well west of Sheridan up north toward Montana to start climbing into the Bighorns in Region Y. You definitely need a good GPS with a landowner chip and a good map from the county you'll be hunting in that shows all the public roads they maintain that allow legal access to state or BLM land. To do otherwise will be setting yourself up for a bad trip and trespassing tickets because the bulk of Region C is private land and a lot of the public land you may be seeing on a BLM map is not legally accessible. Trust me on this because I started hunting out there in 1992 and haven't missed a season in Wyoming since 1999.

That's true once I did more research. We will have topo and an OnX map chip for the unit we choose of 5 or 6. We may be staying away from the large chunks cuz that's where everyone else will be

I hope you are paying real close attention to what I'm saying and get a county map of all the legal public roads they maintain so you know exactly what you can travel on that touch or go through public lands. Your GPS and landowner chip and topo map are worthless for that because they do not give you that kind of information and just because you see a road on them that hits public doesn't mean you can drive on it to hunt that land. There are both big and small chunks of public land throughout Region C that you cannot legally hunt on because you would have to trespass through private property to get there. If you don't understand what I'm saying, please get back on here and ask for help. PS: The landowner chip will have the entire state of Wyoming on it. I hope you mean when you choose one of the 5 or 6 units that are within Region C to hunt in because units 5 and 6 are in Region A over along the SD border.
