Washington Legislative Alert! Help Stop the Anti!

Please get invovled and help with this alert. We can make a difference it starts with you!

LEGISLATIVE ALERT - CALL TO ACTION!!!

Emails and Phone Calls Needed NOW

SB 5831 would exempt mole, gopher, mountain
beaver(limited to timber land owners) and the traps used by Falconers from RCW 77.15.192 and 77.15.194 - the anti trapping initiative 713.

It has been scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Natural Resources, Parks & Shorelines committee on Wednesday, January 30, at 1:30pm in Senate Hearing Room 2 (Cherberg Building).

While we all sympathize with folks who have lost the right to use the above traps, the impact on those with beaver, otter, coyote, etc. problems is just as great.

The message this year, as it was last year, is: 1)the proponents of I713 deliberately lied and mislead the public to get the iniatitive passed; 2)the didn't anticipate the backlash that would occur from urban
residents, golf course owners, the timber companies, etc. so they are once again trying to get the legislature to bail them out; 3) what about all the other people whose lives have been affected negatively by this law?; 4)this piecemeal approach for just a few
segments of the law is not appropriate; 5) If any action is taken, the entire measure should be overturned.

Emails need to be sent to the Committee IMMEDIATELY...
NO LATER THAN TONIGHT...yes, its short notice but that is the way things happen during the legislative session.

RE: Washington Legislative Alert! Help Stop the Anti!

thanks for the info guys
i remember that now. the reason they are doing this is the new state park, that cost millions, is being overrun by moles. they tore up the ball fields, golf cource and the kids play ground. the maintenance people cant do a thing about it becauce they legally cant trap the moles. soooooo...... in the states infinite wisdom, they are trying to pick and choose who and what they can trap......
guess what, not happening!!!!!!

Has anyone heard any news about the hearing? Are they caving in, or are they standing firm? I mailed them all e-mails the night before, but who knows if they read it in time.
One thing I didn't think about until I started sending the e-mails was the importance of summarizing your point in the Re: line. Mine simply said Reject SB 5831. That way, even if they don't take the time to read your e-mail, they know where you stand on the issue. Then, if they are really interested in what you have to say, they will read it(as long as you keep it concise). And don't be rude, just sincere and factual. We need their help.
I guess I've finally had enough, so I joined the WWC last week at the Sportsman's Show. I hope to get involved in some capacity when I can. Maybe I'll start contacting legislators on issues concerning sportsmen. I obviously like typing on the computer. I'm in here all of the time.

RE: Washington Legislative Alert! Help Stop the Anti!

I watched the hearings and they seemed to go Ok. Ed Owens, CRWM Chair and our political consultant made some great points. As the head of "No I-713" campaign he had mass dirt on the "Yes I-713" campaign, exposing them for the liars they are.

The one odd part that stuck out for me was the statement from Senator Erik Poulsen (34th District: West Seattle, Burien and Vashon Island), that the mole bill is not about I-713.

WTH!! Not about the trap ban?!! How could this bill NOT be about the I-713 ban on "body-gripping" traps? Moles and traps when hand in hand during the campaign. The HSUS told the public and media that mole traps would NOT be banned by it - while hunters, CRWM, trappers, and even the WDFW through its (non-positional) "Fact Sheet" on the effects of the proposed law said that they would be!

The "mole bill" has everything to do with the trap ban, initiative 713. Anyone that doesn't see that, simply doesn't want to, IMO.

They haven't updated the status page for this bill yet. You can follow the bill's status (or any bill for that matter) by going here:
http://search.leg.wa.gov/pub/textsearch/default.asp

entering the bill number and the word "status" in the search box and then checking the box for the 2002 legislative session.

This bill was introduced last year and failed to make it to the floor for a vote. With any luck we will keep it from a vote yet again. The legislative process is one where things lie around for months and then go on the move with little or no warning. We just need to stay tuned, stay vigilant, and act when we need to.
