Spear hunting in the South West?

About ten years ago, I had the privilege of going on a hunt with a group that used exclusively spears and other hand weapons to hunt. They hunted as a group and even though it was a lot of work (and a lot of misses) it was an amazing experience.

The problem today is I cant seem to locate any groups of people that would be up for this. I went on only two outings before the group largely disbanded and it'd be great to have someone along who has more experience.

I live in CA and, from what I've gathered so far, spear hunting is illegal for anything except pest animals so it'd probably be something taken to another state (Nevada, Arizona, Utah, etc etc).

Anyone have any ideas?

And before you post it, yes I know it's not the smartest nor most efficient way of downing an animal. It puts myself and the people I'm with at significant risk. I'm prepared to accept that risk and I understand the potential for injury.
