Default Colorado Curiosity

My wife and I plan on moving to Colorado when she's finished with school. She has I think 3-4 more years of college left. But what I'm wondering is what's the hunting like out there? What kind of game do you have? Both big and small. What are your usual seasons? What's the most popular? By that I mean what do hunters travel into the state for. Just general basic questions, so I know what to expect when I get out there. Thanks.

They travel here mostly for elk. Colorado has more elk than any other state.

Muley hunting is also good.

Small game? Turkey is good, and we have a spring and fall season.

Google Colorado DOW for specific info.

There is plenty of deer and elk. There is some small game and turkey. If you like to hunt varmits coyote hunting here is great.

elk, mule deer and whitetails, antelope, black bear, mtn. lion and moose big horn and mtn. goat if you can get lucky enough to draw one of those tags. Getting more and more turkey, lots of coyotes, bobcats, jack and cottontail, prairie dogs to plink.

As has been said, elk are what everyone comes here for.

yip, ducks and geese along with pheasant, bobwhite and scale quail, and you can find chucker on the western slope. warm water fishing in most of the eastern plains lakes and several breeds of trout can be found in many places.

Heading there this Thursday to do some trout fishing for a week! Can't wait to be out on the lake and do some stream fishing! Taking a kayak this time, so should be fun!

Muzzleloading tag in the pocket to hunt a bull elk in September.

That is what this nonresident travels to Colorado for!

Just an FYI on that note, alot of the major water ways are currently blown out due to massive runoffs we are having. Particularly from South park all the way to Wyoming and beyond. So plan accordingly and call ahead to your favorite destination to confirm fishability (is that a word ?). Lakes are full and fishing is excellent in many of them but the big rivers...not so much.

Thanks for the heads up. Have kind of been keeping up with that. I fish Groundhog res. in southwest Co and the West Dolores river. Looking at the snowpack levels, they are already below normal in the southwest part of the state (unlike further north)

Any moving water won't be good fishing in a week. Unless it's a tailwater.
