Colorado Elk Hunt

Some friends of mine are planning a trip from Pa.to Eastern Co. for a late october rifle elk hunt and was wondering what are necessities for that time of year and what you would recommend. I suggested a gps and some bear spray but one the guys laughed and said they were not necessary.:confused0024: As of right now i'm not going (work is slow) but i'm trying not counting myself out.

If it's truely an "eastern Colo." hunt, meaning on the eastern plains of Colo., then chances are that it'll be dry and cool, maybe even cold. Terrain is flat, and there aren't any bears, or at least not enough to even concider them in planning. Rarely would a GPS be needed any where in eastern Colo. either, again for the most part, it's open terrain and not many hills.
Not many elk live on the eastern side, but there are pockets on private land.

I guess their going around boulder or just north of it, and after looking on a map it isn't east at all, i was think denver was more centrally located, i guess i should have looked....:hit:
I was talking to guy that has been out several times and he was telling me that east of denver is good hunting but "if i was looking for 300"+ bulls to keep driving west". Any truth to it? Or is it his opinion. Being the first time out i'd be happy with any legal bull and i may never get back out there, but just more for future reference.

Basically everything about even with Denver west is all mtn region. If you can go I would. Its a experience of a lifetime. Even if you don't harvest a elk. Just seeing those mtn's, and hunting them is a worth while life experience. One you'll want to do over, and over. Don't miss out on the chance!! If anything it'll be a break in trip.
If going in Oct. rifle, I'd be prepared for winter weather. You may get snow, and may not. But your going to want to be prepared for it. I usually pack 3 sets clothes. Light weight if warm, mid weight, and heavy. My mid & heavy are waterproof. A good pair hunting boots, water proof, insulated, good traction, and comfortable. I don't suggest rubber boots for Colorado. Bear spray, I wouldn't sweat it. Bears seem more scared of hunters than anything. I've had a few follow my tracks in snow before, but never got close enough for me to even see them.

I grew up in PA and hunting in these mountains here are a lot harder. Be prepared to do a lot of walking and even if you have a GPS bring a get a topo map of the area and compass. Also check out this web site it can help you out before you get here if you aren't getting a guide. http://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu/maps/...=1&X=400&Y=320

very few elk that are east of Denver, a few east of Colo. Springs, but it's all private ground where the elk are, so best to keep going west from Denver to find elk, of any size.

There was 10 people going, now 2 guys are out so i think there were guys that are going to be asked if they want to go, but all things considered it looks like the cost per guy is going up.
