Planning Alaskan Fishing Trip-need advice

Planning a trip up to Anchorage for Heather and I,
next May/June or around there. I would love to go up
for a hunting trip, but me being in the woods for 9
days would probably not go over well with the better
half. SO, I know I can get away with a 2-3 day fishing
trip for the both of us, with the remainder of the
time in Danali and other site seeing stuff/trips. The
plan is to fly into Anchorage and rent something for
the week (camper truck or van?? or just an exporer and
a tent/hotels, I dunno yet).

Anyway, a search for fishing charters and guides
yeilds a lot of results on google, and I would be
throwing darts to pick some to call. I am thinking
king salmon and/or halibut. I have caught silvers and
reds and pinks when we lived there long ago, but Dad
never took me after kings. I am looking for a guide
to supply all equipment, I don' t want to haul stuff up
there (and I don' t have the equipment to go after
stuff that big anyway).

So any recommendations would be appreciated, also
places to go/stay what ever. I am not interested in
any of those tours they offer, I am planning our own
trip, there is plenty to see/do there without have to
share it with a busload of people. Also, my trip
schedule would revolve around the best time to be
there for the fishing. Fishing would probably need to
be accessible from Anchorage, although the farther the
better to get away from the crowds.

Thanks for any input!

OUT OF SEWARD TRY MARV' S CHARTERS 907-224-6488 SEWARD IS ABOUT TWO HRS DRIVE FROM ANCHORAGE. THAT WOULD BE FOR HALIBUT AND BOTTOM FISH THERE THAT TIME OF YEAR. SILVER SALMON COME IN LATER.
IF YOU ARE WANTING KING SALMON KENAI RIVER IS THE PLACE TO BE ALSO THE RED SALMON ARE AT FULL STRENGHT IN JULY LIKE RIGHT NOW. FRIEND HERE AT WORK GOT A 61 LB KING LAST WEEK AND ANOTHER GOT AN 80 LB ONE. THOSE ARE THE EXCEPTION RATHER THAN THE RULE. BUT JULY IS THE BEST YOU CAN GET THEM EARLIER BUT THE BIG ONES ARE THERE IN JUL. END OF MAY , JUNE AND JULY DEEP CREEK IS GOOD FOR SALT WATER KINGS AND GREAT FOR HALIBUT. HOMER IS THE PLACE FOR HALIBUT. GOOD LUCK

I' d look into Saltwater Safari' s out of Seward as well. They put on combo trips, and also have charters for salmon sharks. I' ve gone with them before and was very pleased with the results.

SALTWATER SAFARI' S ARE BIGGER BOATS (50 FOOTERS) AND ALOT MORE PEOPLE, THEY SEEM TO CATCH PLENTY OF FISH.

Thanks guys I will check them out. July might work better for me anyway, and I can use the July 4th holiday so I don' t each up so many vacation days. I am really psyched about this trip, looking to make reservations here in a month or so.

Keep em coming if anybody has anything they would like to add!

been with salt water safaries and wouldnt recommend them to anyone!

try goodhand charters, if I remember they are out of valdez but its worth the exspense of a beautiful and scenic drive for 150% sastisfaction in the customer service not to mention the first class fishing. shoot me an email [email protected]

better yet, I was thinking...

How about a caribou float trip with some fine arctic char and grayling fishing, and intermingled with some caribou hunting...hmmmmmmmmm

I own the raft and most of the gear you' d need (dry bags extra tent and cooking goodies), you' d need some sleeping bags and cush items of your choice, oh and bow of course. Cost of the bush flight would be in the same ballpark as goodhand or saltwater safari' s price per person fishing trip. You wont be at denali but you' d see things and be able to do things at your leisure and desire, stop when and where you want......

We' ve done the trip in a 9 days and as short as 6 which could end up shorter or longer depending on how it was laid out. I' ll be back in fairbanks this coming weekend, [email protected]

Timing is going to be the harder part of it being late august or early august would be my only two times as I' ll be out " working" the rest of the time. If you are game I know my wife and I would be. oooh aaaah twist my arm lol. I' ll shoot you some pictures of the hunt when I return. I' ll have to scan the char pictures and we didnt fool with the grayling after landing some nice char it would have been almost anticlimatic ;)!
