Turkey Hunting in Washington
Any Washington state turkey hunters? I'm new to this sport and need all the hints and tips I can get. Good locations, etc.

RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
Stevens county is soon to be in the "Top 5 list" of best Turkey hunting in the USA. LOTS of public land - and a lot of landowners who will be more than happy to let you hunt............BUT, remember, you CANNOT use dogs to hunt Turkeys in WA.
Doc E...Casey the PL is at http://www.pointinglabcasey.itgo.com |
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
Thanks for the reply. Could you recommend a good turkey call? Do you have any suggestions about good locations in Stevens county? I don't know the area so I don't have a clue.

RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
I would have to say that if you are a beginner, the box or slate call is the easiest to learn. If you have any experience with using diaphragm calls for elk, you are well on your way to using them for turkeys. I personally like Primos calls, but I'm biased because the company is located in my home town of Jackson, MS.
I'm sure there are lots of guys out there that can give you more info about the area than I can. I hunted over there last season near Trout Lake just across the river from Colville and Kettle Falls for the first time. I'm from the deep south, but I've never seen an area that has as many birds with as much public access. There are tons of birds over there. You can e-mail me if you want more info. |
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
slee,
Thankyou for the information you have provided both here and thru the e-mail. I really appreciate it. |
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
That is interesting information Doc E. I was planning on going to Oregon this Spring, but I will keep the Colville area in mind to ck out, like in the Fall for future reference for Spring 2003.
I'm pretty much in the same situation as Charlie O, just getting started and trying to find an area with access, possible guides in the NW for the first couple of times in the field, and such. I appreciate your post. Good hunting in April. |
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
As far as locations to hunt,,,,,, just about anywhere. LOTS of public land here, and Boise Cascade will let you hunt any of their land as well. Anywhere along the Columbia here is usually really good.

RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
DocE, I went to kettle falls area in 1999 to hunt with the aid of my Uncle who is your nieghbor. He drove me around to various areas most of which were on private land and all the birds we saw were literately feeding on peoples lawns and out in their pastures like the out-of-control Whitetails! It was very frustraiting to watch them and couldn't touch them with a 50 foot shotgun! i'm sure there's some good areas to hunt at but I'll be damned if a local is going to give up his or her honey hole! I since have found much better accessable areas with mostly public land to the west of you in Okanogan Co. near the Loop Lopp Summit area of Hiway 20 and plan on scouting this area next spring again.

RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
Lady Grouse Hunter, I'd be interested in exactly where you went over there. There is a TON of public land crawling with turkeys. True they are usually lower early in the season, but there are still birds up higher. It is dependent on the snow line. As it moves up, so do the birds. By the latter part of the season, birds are all the way up to most hilltops in the area. Just wanted to let you know in case you ever wanted to go back. That area has some of the most birds and public land of any area in the country. Not trying to pull you away from a spot that you are happy with, though. Good luck this year.

RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
YOUR 20 GAUGE SHOULD WORK FOR TURKEY HUNTING, I SEEN AND HEARD STORIES ABOUT GUYS AND GALS THAT HAVE SHOT THEIR TURKEY WITH A 20 GAUGE, BUT THE GUN OF CHOICE FOR MOST HUNTERS IS THE 12 GAUGE, MOSSBERGE IS A NICE GUN TO LOOK AT FAIRLY CHEAP, BUT GOOD FOR THE VALUE. GOOD LUCK,
|
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
hey guys, 12 gauge 3 or 3 1/2", which is best for turkey? Short barrel or long barrel?
|
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
12 GAUGE WITH 3 INCH SHELL I WOULD GO WITH THE SHORT BARREL. JUST BECAUSE EASIER TO SWING AROUND THAN A LONG BARREL.
|
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
CharlieO
...I totaly agree with Robb....even though I shoot a long barrel...wife shoot's the new Rem. 870 turkey gun short barrel. Never have taken a shot over 30 yd's....so the 3" shell's do the job |
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
Slee sorry for the delayed answer back.
I went in the Spring of 99' to visit my uncle in Kettle. It was the first week in May (still snowing too!) drove over by myself & on the way up 25 I detoured to the hills just east of the resort in Hunters. I did find some good sign including droppings and a few breast feathers on a side road. I also went a little farther north and scouted some mixed select cut and turned out to be 20 acer private lots through out the whole area just north of Hunters. On the way out of this area, I came around the last bend in the road near the pavement and had a herd of 17 Bighorns blocking my way out! Three were trophy class rams and I have the pics to prove it. One had an ear tag on him and was probably a project for Bioligists. It was a cool site indeed... I arrived at uncles house on a Friday and Saturday morning he took me out for a cruise along the nearby Kettle River valley areas. We drove and drove and drove til' he drove me crazy driving around and not finding anything to set up for the next morning. I left with a bad taste in my mouth and really wanted a more devoted person to really get out in the woods like a true dedicated hunter should. Charlie, I would love to join you on your scout trip up in the areas you mentioned earlier and have two decoys just waiting to call in a tom over! |
RE: Turkey Hunting in Washington
