antelope question
I will hopefully draw Wyoming antelope and deer tags this year. I am a Southern boy, have neverhunted out West, and usually hunt with a 30-06/150 grain Rem.Core-lokt. Isthis too much for antelope? It's what Iam most comfortable and used to shooting. I have a .270 if I need to go to 130 gr, but I hate the gun.
It seems everyone on TV who antelope hunts has a smaller caliber/lighter bullet. |
RE: antelope question
If you're comfortable with the -06 and can shoot it accurately, take it with you. I know guys that shoot .300 WSM's at Antelope...perhaps that's "too much" but the most important element is that you know the gun and can shoot it accurately at longer distances.

RE: antelope question
Shoot them with whatever you got and what you feel comfortable with. They say antelope hunting is a "long range" game. Of all the goats I have shot I have never shot one over 150 yards. Good luck and have fun Antelope hunting is a riot.

RE: antelope question
Not such thing as too much, just bad hits. I've hunted "out west" all my life and my gun of choice is a .300 win mag.

RE: antelope question
Use whichever you like, either one of those two will blow through an antelope....least my .270 with 130gr soft points does...
which is why I picked up a .243, my friend was using 95gr nosler partitions and those also went right through. antelope are pretty small animals. If you have a .243 I'd say take that, but if its between the .270 or .30-06, pick the one you like. Last time a bunch of us got together, one guy was shooting 125gr from his '06. |

RE: antelope question
Federal makes .30-06 all the way down to 125 gr. If I were you I would just shoot a 165 or 150 out of your '06. My remington 700 shoots the 165's best. Get a couple different ones and shoot them and see what shoots best, and always take the rifle you are more comfortable with, leave the .270 at home haha.

RE: antelope question
Nothing wrong with your 30-06 & 150-grain bullets. Most people in Montana & Wyoming use the same rifle and ammo for antelope, deer & elk.

RE: antelope question
I use a .300 win mag for everything. 180 grain, and never had a problem with deer or antelope. Sometimes they even die from shock.... :) Works for me.
