Odds on drawing an elk tag NM
I'm considering a guided hunt for bull elk in NM with either a muzzleloader or bow for 2010. If I apply, what are my chances on drawing a tag? I will be doing this through the outfitter. Thanks in advance!!!

with an outfitter, you get an advantage...higher draw odds, certainly contact him and ask his advice on which season etc..
also consult NM game n fish for details for last years draw odds... anyone can draw anytag, no pref pts.
Certainly with an outfitter your odds go up, bow they go up, i think rifle are the toughest....also if there are multiple seasons...1 will be easier than another, ML i beleive is right inbetween the 2 for odds of drawing.

Bottom right hand side of sheet, look at 2007 - 2008 drawing odds. You want to look at hunts that begin with "ELK-3"

Your odds all depend on where you want to hunt. First ask yourself if you want quality, or quanity. The better Units will be tougher to draw Guided or Unguided. You can see the difference on the draw odds by doing just a bit of looking.
I have been using Jim at http://www.newmexicobiggamehunting.com/
Give him a call and talk. He will point you in the right direction, and tailer a hunt to your wants and needs.

I just heard this year NM is going to charge tag fees up front....not sure if that's true or just a rumor...
that would probably increase the odds a bit at least, if not a lot, especially in this economy, I wish they would just bill you if/when you drew, I don't mind buying a non res license etc...or paying for a pref pt, but having to shell out fees up front for 5 species per state etc....is a bit ridiculous, especially when they take so long to mail you back the money.
