Nice picture of the boat ABM. That river looks very low! Thanks for posting it.

RE: Alaska Thread
Wanted to say Hi to everyone here, and I posted this question a few months ago but just after I got deployed briefly and it seems the board changed over and my post was erased. Nimrod I believe responded so sorry if I didn't get back to you. Anyways I have been in Ak now for 3 almost 4 years and haven't gotten the chance to go hunting here. I was wondering if anyone would be will to help me out and possibly take me under their wing. The hunting regs are really open to interpretation but seem to be very narrow in other and in the same circumstances. And I also am not sure how to hunt most game in this state. I have a rifle, bow, and shotgun. I am up for anything, my schedule is the only thing that can hold me back. I noticed caribou is open for bow almost all year but again have no clue how to hunt them. Also how and when should I put in for permits and for what? Thanks Bob

RE: Alaska Thread
Where you stationed bob? What do you mean as far as the regs being open to interpretation?
|
RE: Alaska Thread
I am stationed at Ft. Richardson. I am not sure what I really meant by open to interpretation. I think its just the more I look into it the more I read into things and try to look for a loop hole that they can get you.

RE: Alaska Thread
So you're in Los Anchorage. Sorry about your luck. There's hunting to be done around there, just depends on what you're after. You can apply for sheep tags in Unit 14 and hunt out of your back door if you're drawn. Same thing for the Fort Rich moose permits. You missed out on the winter draw for this year, but you can still apply for the spring draw. You can hunt waterfowl in the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge or out in the Palmer Hay Flats. You can bait black bears up the Mat-Su or down on the Kenai. You can get a charter for black-tailed deer out of Whittier or Seward. Lots of options. Just depends on what you want to hunt, what your budget is, and how much work you want to put into it.
As far as the regs be sure you understand the definitions portion listed in the back. That's what everything refers to so make sure you know the finer details of the wording. They're not that hard to differentiate though. If you have questions just ask. AK Jeff |
RE: Alaska Thread
Thanks a lot Jeff. Also I was wondering what hunting can I get in between now and Sept, considering July-Sept will be real sketchy on when I will be free to hunt before I leave again for another year?
|
RE: Alaska Thread
There's always spring bear hunting. If you can't start until July the hide quality of the bears likely won't be the best. There's areas where caribou season opens in July or August too. Most moose seasons start the first of September. It all depends on what you want to hunt and how far you can travel.

RE: Alaska Thread
ABM - Have you got that new baby girl eating halibut yet?;) We have finally got the makings of Winter here in Juneau - some snow and more in the forecast. Good luck on the draws!

RE: Alaska Thread
Hey Phish, not quite yet, but I'm sure she'll love it as much as her big sister does. Unfortunately all the halibut is back up in Fairbanks and I'm down here in Vegas, so all I can do is hope my folks don't tear through it all before I get a chance to get my hands on it again.
It should be in the mid 60's here today, low is getting in the upper 30's at night, but they said it is supposed to start warming up this coming week. Hopefully we won't get any of those 100 degree days before we leave in May. Fairbanks is getting a nice long dose of winter as well, glad we skipped out on this cold snap. No luck for us on the draw, but probably a good thing. The last thing I need is to go on a sheep hunt in the middle of building our home. I'm not sure the wife would go for that. |
RE: Alaska Thread
ABM - No luck on the draw here either. Maybe we'll have some in the next go-around. [:'(] That's too bad about the fish being in one town and you in the other - I'm sure your folks are enjoying it! I know we are really enjoying our side of the trade.
Hang in there, Dad - give your little one a hug for Brenda and I. ;) |
