RE: Alaska Thread
Good seeing you last night Nimrod. Had a late night last night finishing up work, then an early start to the morning. I got a call out to go work on the barges at STP, on the way back I got a good view of the polar bear. He was sacked out cold, eyes locked shut and strewen out over some driftwood. I got 2 pictures of him from about 25 yards away from 2 different angles, and the roll ran out. He' s not that big of a bear, maybe a 6 footer, but there' s still a different feeling in the air when you are around a polar bear, even if he is sound asleep!
The days been full of ups and downs, finally got word that work is going to start on my building, so I should have heat, water and sewar again in a week or two. The power has flickered all day and gone out twice now, my reporting system crashed so I' ve been struggling with that, I had some rush work to go to town and Alaska Airlines cancels their only flight today, at least the trucks are headed south though, and I' m stuck at work on my 6th wedding anniversary. BLAH. [X(] Got 8-10 pounds of caribou jerky in the works though so that should lift my spirits. :D Looks like junogrl will meet my folks before I get a chance to meet her. Have fun in Fairbanks next weekend, I hope Wendy gets an arsenol started! Looks like SEAK and I will get one trip down south on Tuesday night to chase the bou around. He' ll probably get one since he leaves Wednesday and I' ll have to butcher it up for him. [>:] I don' t mind, got nothing else to do up here.[&:] |
RE: Alaska Thread
Hey Nim and ABM, glad to hear from both of you. Sounds like you have Juneau weather up there. Here....well, here we have Hawaii weather! Haven' t seen a raindrop in a couple of weeks, and, to tell you the truth, it' s too blasted hot right now! But, the heat aside, it' s gorgeous, and I wouldn' t trade you places. Nim, I heard that you gave SeAk a hat with a " dirty name" on it. He ' fessed up later that it says " Shovel Guy." Too funny. I expect someday he' ll get a hat with " Tommy Chuckit" under a picture of a king crab. [&:]:D Looking forward to next weekend and meeting your folks, Jerry. I' ve only been to Fairbanks once since I graduated from college, and even that visit was more than 4 years ago, so I' m looking forward to the drive, the poking around fishing spots on the way up there, and the long weekend in general!

RE: Alaska Thread
Pretty cool drive down the Haul Road tonight. We saw a ton of wildlife. SEAK and I were after ptarmigan and caribou, but didn' t realize all that we' d see. Here' s the list
3 different herds of musk ox (about 40 in all) 9 grizzly bears, 6 loners and one sow with twins about 200 caribou flock of ptarmigan, 6 bow kills one gray/brown wolf one arctic fox one red fox 3 golden eagles a few hawks 2 species of geese various other types of birds and a duck. We got two stalks in on caribou. The first was over a mile out, on tussoks and wet tundra, but we managed to get out in front of a herd. There were a lot of caribou moving through that area, but it was wide open, and getting within range would be nearly impossible. Then to make matters worse, the wind shifts and the caribou sniff us out at about 250 yards. We were driving back and found a single bull on a hillside next to some rocks, so we headed out after him. We had a perfect set up with SEAK on top of the rocks, and me below, and when we finally got on the bou, we were right on top of him. He was about 40 yards from me, and 40 yards from SEAK, but headed up towards SEAK. I saw him draw back, but couldn' t see anything, and come to find out the bou pegged him at under 40 yards and ran right at me when he spooked. I was caught in the open trying to close the gap since he disappeared around the rock, and if I would of had 30 more seconds, I probably would of had a 10 yard shot at him. Oh well, that' s hunting. |

RE: Alaska Thread
Hey guys.
It' s been awhile, but I' m back online. Man, I tell you if Bill Gates made cars, he' d be out of business (and dead!!!). I can' t believe what we accept from Microsoft!!! [:@] Anyhow, I' ve been getting ready for the archery only season here on Kodiak. Weather has been damn warm lately...good thing I don' t like the early season hunting! Shake it sleazy... Andy Kodiak |
RE: Alaska Thread
Nimrod, cool deal on the connections! I' m hoping to put my family connection in Colorado to good use this October or November! :D
I' d agree that we are pretty lucky to see all this from a nights drive, I would of liked to have gotten out more this time up, but things have been odd around here. Hopefully next time I come north in late Sept. I' ll find myself back down there. Andy, good to hear from you again. Good luck with the upcoming season! Bill Gates gave me some software that got worm infected as well. I had both the spybot and the msblast worms which were a pain to get rid of! Wish he' d spend some of that hard earned money to keep his software so vulnerable! three more get ups and a bag drag and I' m outta this frozen hell for 4 weeks! |
RE: Alaska Thread
ABM- LOOKS LIKE I WILL BE IN COLORADO IN OCT. SO I MIGHT TRY TO RUN UP TO WY IF A CAN GET A OTC TAG FOR A PRARIE GOAT. NOT SURE IF THEY ARE AVAIL OR NOT.
2 MORE GET UPS AND I' M OUTA HERE FOR 6 WEEKS DAYS SURE DO DRAG WHEN HUNTING SEASON IS CLOSE. |
RE: Alaska Thread
What time are you looking at being in Colorado? I am hoping to be there around the 10th-13th. We are planning on hunting the mid western region for elk. Hopefully I' ll have my new toy along to play with while we are out.
You ain' t lying about these days dragging on. And to top off the end of my hitch, I get an audit by the state Wednesday afternoon. [X(] I' ll be so ready to get outta here! Good luck and have fun for the next 6 weeks. Remember, PICK A SPOT! [8D] |
RE: Alaska Thread
Well, the trip to Fairbanks was great. Jerry, your family is awesome. We had a great time with them. Saw a lot of wildlife along the way--brown and black bear, moose, beaver, 2 red fox, mink, etc. And, hey, I don' t care what SeAk tells you, I am NOT scared of swans.
Nim--loved the " shovel guy" hat...made me laugh! |
