RE: Alaska Thread
Man, that is a beautiful caribou, S/M!
ABM/VBM - Hey, there' s a condo for sale right next door to me. Shall I tell the realtor to send you all the info? LOL If you moved to Juneau, you could get that scar on the hand ritual taken care of right away and then while you are healing - I could give you some salmon catching lessons. With a hunter like you for a next door neighbor, I could keep you supplied with salmon steaks in trade for game (heck, I wouldn' t even have to dirty-up my .338 anymore).:D |
RE: Alaska Thread
Phish--is it condo #1 in your building that' s for sale?
VBM--if it is condo #1, it was my grandmother' s....the current owner is the same woman who bought it from us, I think. We sold it in 1999, so I' m not sure of the condition now, but it was in excellent condition when we sold it. My grandmother was very neat and particular, and made several improvements while she lived there. SEAK--Hope you had a good trip back north! |
RE: Alaska Thread
Oh, and since I live in the next building over, I could wave to you from my living room. :D
Phish--have you gotten the scar-on-the-hand requirement taken care of yet? ;) |
RE: Alaska Thread
I' m leaving Saturday morning for Anchorage for the day, then off to DC and driving west to Las Vegas, so I won' t be able to be reached for a few days. I' m curious to know how much they are asking. We' d be buying it as a rental property for the next couple of years. I' d imagine the rental market is seasonal with all the legislature stuff.
Could you guys drop me an e-mail with any realators in the area that you know are good? Thanks for letting me know! Ya' ll be good for the next couple of weeks! [:D |
RE: Alaska Thread
Juno grl - Yep, its #1. Don' t really know any of the particulars, and haven' t been inside it. We did peek in the window - did someone in your family install the orange carpet in the livingroom? Yikes! :D
As for the " Scar-on-the-Hand" Ritual, I used to partake in that on a pretty regular basis, either power trolling for salmon, longlining for ' buts and blackcod, or carving up venison. My best was when I was into my third deer and third 6-pack at the same time. My partner noticed my problem before I did and calmly took my knife away from me and had me wrap my hand up in his hanky so I wouldn' t mess up his car on the way to Bartlett Hospital. You know the saying - " young and dumb" ? Nim - You know anybody that' s tried one of those .270 WSM yet? I keep threatening to order one (maybe a barreled action to build up), but I' d like to hear real feedback besides the reviews in the magazines. I never owned a regular .270, but I know it can be a particularly good caliber for alpine deer hunts, and also goats, sheep, and caribou. ;) |
RE: Alaska Thread
Phish or juno grl, if either of you would drop me an e-mail with some info on the condo, such as square footage, bedrooms, bathrooms, assn. dues, any estimate on what it might cost, and any other particulars, I would appreciate it. Like I said before, I' ll be out for 10 days, but there' s a chance I could get down to Juneau in mid-late April or early June, so if it sounds good enough, we might look into trying to buy it at one of those dates.
Phish, We used a .270 on a few bou this year, and it worked great. I target shot it a few times, and it doesn' t kick for squat, and is a real straight shooter, I was impressed. I' m not sure if it was a WSM or whatever type, but I know it was a brand new model out that the Oregon crew has as a sponsor. not sure which manufacturer however. Talk to you all later, got a long drive coming up! Gotta finish packing first! Nim and SEAK, see yaz in the morning |
RE: Alaska Thread
ABM - Sorry, but the condo has been sold. My wife spoke with the realtor yesterday out at the Home Show and she said it sold after last weekend' s open house.
I don' t know if anyone else on here is having the same thing happen to them, but I get a space of about 2 to 3 inches of printed lines near the bottom of these pages that is completely blacked out and unreadable. Could be something causing it on my end, but it is showing up in the bottom 1/3 of each page (and usually where I am getting an answer to a question). In this case I missed the answer on the .270 WSM. BTW, had some wonderful pan-fried venison backstrap tonight! Man is that stuff good. No wonder we are out of deer meat ' way before the next season! :D |
RE: Alaska Thread
PHISH- NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE .270 WSM (?WIN SHORT MAG) NOT SURE WHAT IT STANDS FOR. I HAVE A .270 HUSQUVARNA (SP) I KNOW IT WILL DO IT BUT I WON' T USE IT AGAIN IF I EVERY HUNT GOATS WITH A SMOKING STICK....I WOULD USE THE 300 WIN. MAG. I LOST A NANNY GOAT AFTER 3 .270 SHOTS AND 2 30-06 SHOTS...WE THINK ALL CONNECTED, THE GOAT COULD ONLY MOVE IT' S HEAD AND NECK AFTER THE FIRST SHOT AND FLOPPED OVER AND QUIT MOVING AFTER THE FIFTH SHOT, BUT SOME HOW MADE IT 4 FEET TO THE CLIFF AND ENDED UP IN THE OCEAN[:@][&o][X(] ALL THE SHOTS WERE , 100 YARDS
MY PARTNER LATER USED MY .270 AND GOT A VERY NICE( 3-1/2 Y.O. 9-9/16 INCH ) BILLY, THAT DAY. OTHERWISE I REALLY LIKE THE .270 CAL ...FOR SHEEP, BLACK BEAR AND CARIBOU IT WOULD BE GREAT. MY DAD USED THE ONE I HAVE AND SHOT ALOT OF MOOSE WHEN WE LIVED IN NEWFOUNDLAND....MUCH SMALLER MOOSE THAN WE HAVE. NOW YOU MUST ALSO REMEMBER THAT THIS INFO IS FROM A GUY THAT SHOOTS BOWS 99% OF THE TIME. |
RE: Alaska Thread
Nim - I' ve used other people' s original .270 Win years ago for goat and always got one shot - one kill, so I was impressed. This was Jack O-Conner' s favorite cartridge for everything. This new version is one of those that is part of the " latest craze" built up on a fatter shell than the original, and ends up fitting in the short actions. What I have read on them has had good reviews. (I' d just like to hear some actual " this is what happened to me" reports on it.)

RE: Alaska Thread
phish- i know .270 will work for goats but having lost one that should not have moved after the first shot i figure i would used the 300 mag. goats are such tough critters. we did not see this one flop over the edge. we were in the brush heading down to it and heard rocks roll.
lil hunter- nice to have met you @ the ABA banquet activities this past week-end i hope you enjoyed it. from my end (working it) it seemed to go well juno grl - what would you think of as a nickname for someone that was relentless , and quick like a pet weasel?:D[>:];) |
