Default Southern Colorado Dow Tag Allotment Proposals

We have been to all the Dow meetings this spring and here are some changes that will likely happen at the Commissioners Tag allotment meeting in may.

Unit:
68&681:
Deer- 25% more buck tags to be issued in the regular draw
Elk- No 1st Season cow tags / 45% decrease in cow tags across the board.
76-79:
Deer- Same as last year
Elk- 5% Increase in cow elk tags across the board
80&81:
Deer- Same as last year
Elk- No 1st Season cow elk tags / 60% cow elk tag decrease across the board / 4th season rifle bull tags reduced to 200 tags.
82:
Deer- 70% increase in regular season buck tags.
Elk- Increased elk tags in early rifle seasons and decrease in later rifle seasons.
83:
Deer- 35% increase in buck tags in regular seasons.
Elk- Same as last year
791:
No regular season bull elk tags in this unit. Only bull tags will be allowed during the de-predation hunts starting in may.

Where most of us hunt in 80&81 the elk population has been getting hammered the last 5 years due to extra cow tags and late season hunts. So the numbers of hunters in December season will drop from 385 hunters to around 75 hunters. The First rifle season will still have either sex tags but it will no longer have cow tags avaible as a main hunt. Which means less people and more of a quality hunt. There will be no over the counter extra cow tags alloted for this year in Second and Third rifle seasons.

Thanks for posting; we hunt 68. Nice to see they will put out a few more buck tags. Did they say anything about extra doe tags?

That 45% decrease in cow tags is interesting....we have been seeing a lot more elk over that last few years. Did they give a reason for the decrease?

Feddoc,

No changes other than posted so no doe changes. The cow elk reduction is partly because they think they are at the numbers they should be for elk. And are trying to maintain those numbers.

Let's see here... we hunt elkthru June and July for two summers, a 5th season actually, to help the alfalfa ranchers. Then we cut the tags in half to keep the population up.

what part of this am I not understanding??? (oh yeah the $$$ part [:'(] )
