I have on three seperate occasions had outfitters question me on what I was doing hunting on national forest.Giving me lectures on where I could hunt.2 times in the Bob Marshall and once in the Bighole.I am undecided on whether I like them or not. But they do leave a sour taste in my mouth.

newjerseyheadhunter, you're right about when you pay for something it cheapens it , one time I had to pay for a big beautiful blonde and it certainly cheapened the experience but gawd did I have a goooood time , a lot I suppose like a guided hunt lol

I think they have there place. But it does get discouraging when you start knocking on doors to ask permission and everything is locked up by outfitters.

I ran into these outfitters on Forest Service trails and on some seldom used pack trails.I just told them that I really did not want to run into them either. I just let them know where I would be hunting and left it at that. One experience ended with the wardens trying to find my camp for a week.Seems there were 3 rifle shots fired on a rdge top. When it was archery only. This outfitter blamed it on me.Got back to the trailhead to find the truck tires spiked.2 miles down the road here comes the warden sliding sideways inthe road pulled us over and checked my truck and stock trailer inside and out. Only found 2 sets of archery equipment and 1 huge Bull Elk.Then he relates the story and I tell him where I ran into this guy and told him about all the salt licks he got set out. These pack trails were not even on the wardens map and that outfitter was out of his assigned area.

you can't judge them all by a few bad apples, that being said I also ran into 2 "outfitters " while on foot on public land , they rode up in a hurry and started yelling that there was a spike bull dead about 300 yds from me and I replied "so" whats that got to do with me ? they were both wearing sidearms and got increasingly beligerent without actually threatening me , when I had enough I took the rifle cradled in my arm and very obviouslyclicked the saftey off, one said "did you just take the saftey off of your rifle " to which I replied "yes Sir " they looked at each other and rode off as quickly as they rode up.

Guys I am soory you have had bad run ins with guides. All I can say is I have NEVER acted that way to anyone while hunting. I have seen a FEW people in the woods and I just go another direction, mainly because I don't want people knowing I am guiding while I am out there, people WILL follow a guide around sometimes! It sounds like you all ran into some REAL morrons NOT REAL GUIDES!

sounds like it.
The only time i ever had any trouble was when some old fart came FLYING up a snow packed/ ice road hauling a 20+ foot horse trailer and i was pulled off the side of the road cutting firewood on Ntl. forest and he gets all out of the truck acting like he owned the place and asked to see the firewood permits. Im like, you a forest ranger? Hes like no, and i say, then what business is it to you? He says, well youre cutting on my property! I just laugh and point out to all the trees that have been marked by the rangers that you can not cut down and plus i ran into the ranger a few hours before i started cutting and made sure it was ntl forest i was cutting on. You'll run into these SOB's that like to think they own everything when in truth, they barely have a pot to _ _ _ in. I dont mind helping other hunters find animals. i know how it feels when youre 2-3 days into the hunt and havnt seen any animals, i always try to point them in the direction ive seen animals at and give them some pointers.
And the part about not letting people know you are a guide is a great idea. If i knew there was a guide in the area i hunt, dang right i'd be shadowing him lol! Well atleast take note of the areas hes going to and give them a try when hes not there.
