Non resident beginners guide for elk?
 

Hello,
I've been interested in going out west somewhere and doing an elk hunt. I would probably be doing a non guided, public land hunt. I would probably either do an archery or blackpowder. Sounds like some states are hard to get permits for if you are just starting. Anyone that has done this have any tips they could pass along on the process and such? I probably won't be doing this for another year or so, but would like to start the research now.

Easiest is Colorado and put in for Wyoming, plenty of public land and enough elk to make it interesting.

Icedern, For someone starting out I'd highly recommend a subscription to the Huntin' Fool magazine. It is the one stop source for all western big game applications and provides complete draw stats. Great for someone learning the game.

Also, I'd definitely suggest you subscribe and start applying this year to accumulate bonus points for future years. That is how you get quality DIY public land hunts.

I've been at it 10 years and taken 3 bulls from 320" to 350". Best tags = best bulls.

One state I'd highly recommend for you is New Mexico because they have great elk,high nonresident quotasand no bonus point system. You have a great chance of drawing a good tag your first year.

Colorado should be a last resort state. OTC tags and lots of elk but very poor quality bulls.

Does anyone know anything about Elk Creek Outfitters in Northwestern Montana? I saw some info and ads. Wonder if anyone has personal knowledge.

I have hunted that country it is steep and thick. Its all national forest around there you can camp anywhere and hunt yourself. I do not know anything about that outfit however.

New Mexico is good place to find big bulls. The top hunting units are the units 16 A,B,C,D, and E, but it is hard to drawa tag in these units. Unit 15 is also a good place to find big bulls andyou aremore likely to drawout. We do most all our hunting in units 10, 12, and13 these units are good for elk, and unit 10 has some nice mule deer. if you have any questions let me know.
