Washington Blacktail ?

Can any of my fellow Washington hunters help me out? I am wondering if any of you have ever used the "can" to bring in a BT? If so, how well did it work? And when do the bucks start rutting? I went for a walk in the woods on thurs (nov 8) and jumped a real nice 4x4 at 20 yards. His neck was HUGE. I am thinking that they are rutting now. Do you think that it will be on come Nov 20th? BTW, I put my stand up about 60 yards from where I saw that buck

I have hunted mulies and elk my whole life, but this is only my third year huntin the BT's and I have yet to get one. Thanks for any info guys.

Im not sure what you mean by useing a can? Up here in whatcom county last year I took a buck the last weekend of regular season and he was starting to rut then (swelled neck and all). I have called sidka blacktails before in Alaska with a cow call. And one year just before late buck season I rattled in a big three and four point, just above the skagit river (lower finny cr.) I hope any of that can help.

I am in Whatcom Co too. The can is the call that imitates a doe in heat "bleat". I would think that it would work, but I am not sure on the BT's. Thanks for the response!

As far as I know, all deer have similar vocalizations. I don't see why "The Can" wouldn't work on Blacktails or Mulies. As far as the rut, from what I know here in Pierce Co., the rut is in full swing around Nov 22nd. The neck gets swollen from fighting with bushes, sapplings, and other deer. This should have been going on for a few weeks now. They are more than ready to breed right now. They're just waiting on the ladies. If you can convince one that a doe is hot, he'll be interested.

Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em!

When I was going to School at Western Washington [State College back then] in Bellingham in the late 60's and very early 70's, the local area deer would be in the rut by the second week of November if the weather pattern was similar to this Fall. If the weather got cold early and stayed that way - the rut seemed to start up earlier, too. As long as you can see what's going on around you - I'd give &quot;the can&quot; a try. Be prepared, a horny buck may just run right up to you. If you have cat sign in the area, keep your eyes open and watch your back - more than bucks will be attracted to a bleat-style call. Good luck. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Moved to Birch Bay full time about two years ago. Vacatined up here for the last 10 years..

What Phish says is very true. Dont know where your planning on hunting, but there have been many documented sightings of cougar near the State Park area..

It would be a real small world if you said you lived in the Village also!
You can catch me once in awhile sitting in the duck blind on the way to Blaine (in the Harbor)

Not in the Village, but in Lincoln Green! Where is the duck blind? You don't mean Drayton Harbor do ya?

Well guys I live out at Acme and this morning (the last day of late buck) my hunting partner and I went up twords Kendal and he zapped a really big three point with lots of nobs on his horns and two eye guards on his right horn and one on the left. He was also a heavy brut that was in the rut hard, he really stunk. On opening day of regular season I took a four point muley and my brother took a two by three the same day. And then five days later his son (my nephew) took a really nice four point muley in the same area. We have been really blessed with luck, but with some hard work and determination you can take a nice buck.

I took my 3rd blacktail this season and the last one was opening day second season. Nov 14th and he was in the rut. Thick neck and glands were pouring out the stink. This was the first nice blacktail I have taken, 3x3 with about a 15 in spread. the back tines are about
8 in long.

I have never tried to call or rattle a blactial in but have read many articles and it seems to work.

Otto,

I am not sure I know where the blind that is that your talking about. Is it right in front of the radio towers? And where do you park the rig? I will stop and say hello if I can find you!
