Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
Can someone please explain this theory in a little more detail. I know its illegal, unethical, and unsportsmanlike, but sometimes you just want to know how. This issue has come up more than a few times while in the blind, and I would like to know a little more about it. In other words..........................HOW DO YOU DO IT!

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
I think that this either has to do with very early models or is duck blind legend. I have contemplated and tried it with mine for four years now and am unable to do it.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
ok i had a verona that would do it.
first close the action then load the mag tube then put the mag lock on then put the third shell in and push it all the down then put the 4th shell in the chamber then close the action slow by hand holding the floating shell down and that is how you do it when the first shot goes off and the gun cycles it chambers the floating shell and turns the mag lock off let me know if that works[8D][8D][8D][8D] |
RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
Well, the Benelli does not have a magazine cutoff. And you can push the shell follower down with the bolt open, but once the bolt starts closing the follower rises. If the follower is then forced down, it blocks the bolt from closing about halfway. I just went out and tried it again.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
OK i did not know it didnt have a mag lock
but if it did thats how you do it anyway with out a mag lock i dont see how you could it [8D][8D][8D] |
RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
I think it will actually work in any gun that you can drop a shell into the carrier. While playing around on a slow hunt, my buddy did it to his Beretta Extrema. I fiddled a little with my 390's but dont really care to do it so left it alone.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
Sounds kinda silly to me, especially breakin federal law for an extra shot as the birds are farther out of range!

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
The SBE II won't do it. The HK imported SBE's were the models that would float the fourth shell. On those models you could push the carrier down while closing the bolt. The Benelli's have a magazine cutoff but, it's an automatic one and different than the likes of the Brownings, Weatherbys, etc manual style. You can float the forth on a few other models. Even the Browning Golds with the mag cutoff can float the forth. It's not real easy or pratical. I don't recommend floating the fourth shell for safety and possible jamming issues. Ontop of the legal issues.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
browning gold will not do it at least mine won't
i have a browning gold hunter 3 1/2 last years model [8D][8D][8D] |
RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
All of the Browning Golds with a magazine cutoff switch will float the fourth shell. It's cumbersome, but you just have to know how to do it.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
the mag lock is manual it will not flip with the cycle so it does you no good

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
Just out of curiocity has anyone done it with a pump that has a magazine cut off like the Benelli Nova?
|
RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
Yep! You unlock the magazine before you fire.
|
RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
You can do it with SBE II. I do it with my when I hunt coyotes. You just have to know how to do it. You should really not be talking about this on here. You are just aking for trouble. If you don't know how the only way to learn is if someone shows you how. Besides it is illegal to do unless you are hunting game to has no shell limit.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
My buddy has an M1 field and I don't no who showed him how to do it (because he's to stupid to figure out anything like that on his own), but he does it once in a while and thinks it's cute. I think it's stupid. If you want an extra shot then just stick your plug in your pocket and load up all five. Better yet, just eat your plug and thread on an extended magazine. Load up some nickel-plated lead and just punchout wide open. Seriously three shots are plenty if you make them count.

RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
Let me start by saying that this subject interests me solely from an academic standpoint only to satisfy a technical curiosity but serves no practical purpose for me.
This started as a question about the Benelli and that is the only one I had previously heard of. Now, we have seven different guns that can supposedly float the fourth shell. If this were really the case, do you not think that some savvy game wardens would be writing tickets like crazy? It would not matter if you actually did it or not. What matters is if the gun is capable of it. To everyone that says, "Well, my gun will do it but I don't do it because it is illegal". That is the same as saying "Well, I leave the plug out but I never load more than three shells". Back to the technical side, my SBE was manufactured in 2000 and while it is possible to float the fourth shell, I only see two ways to do it, neither one is easy, safe, or feasible. One would be to omit or modify the cartridge drop lever in the trigger assy to allow the cartridge carrier to be pushed down as the bolt is closed. The other would involve disassembling the magazine after a round was chambered. Yeah, I know this sounds crazy and irresponsible. That is why I would highly advise against the practice and will not be doing it myself. Cats aren't the only thing curiosity can kill. |
RE: Floating 4th shell in a SBEII
This question got way to far out of hand. I just wanted to know for my own personal mechanical enjoyment. I'll leave it as a Duck-Blind Legend.
................hell, if I wanted to cheat, I wouldn't try and Float a shell. I would take the freakin plug out. |
