Decoys

How many decoys do you use?

Do you think useing less decoy is better?

I use 12 drake mallards, 12 hen mallards, 2 feeding butts, 2 sleeping mallards, 2 bluebills, and a drake and hen mojo duck.

Depends on the situation. If your hunting early season birds that may not be flocked up yet smaller spreads will due the job. Late season birds tend to sit in larger groups so more decoys will work better. Observe the flocks that you are hunting if they are in small numbers use a smaller spread and vica versa. Also if you are hunting in a place where your decoys may be hard to be noticed use a larger spread. Use your best judgement.

Me and G-Dawg put our 6 mallards, and used the Vortex and Dabbler opening morning.

Last Saturday we put out about 2 mallards, and some wood ducks.

I usually put out 18 mallards, (2 feeders, 2 sleepers, 4 drakes, 4 hens, and 6 magnums) but I just purchased a dozen bluewing teal, and 6 woodies. I might add them to the spread also.

Sometimes I think more is better...but other times, especially once season rolls along, I think less is better. The more decoys, the more chances for ducks to figure out they're fake I think.

keep it simple. If you have a lot of birds that work your spot, put out a big spread. A smaller number of birds, then use a smaller spread.

if ya where the birds wanna be ya wont need large numbers .... altho later in the season its nuthin for me to set out 60-100 duck decoys if there are large flocks and alot of migrators comin into the area ..... also if the competition gets stiff .... the numbers will help draw those birds in ..... ya wanna be able to pull those birds ..... all i can say is get out there and do it ... ya will learn oer time what ya need where and why .... good luck
