Goose decoys

Hey guys i'm new to the site i'm 15 and this is my first year of hunting. I was at cabelas and saw the prices of their canada goose decoys they were terrible. I'd like to goose hunt but i don't have enough money to spend on decoys. some was close to $100 for a set of about 4 or 6. I was wonderin if theres an alternitive to buying them, like making them.

I made some sillouthes (sp?) out of 1/4 inch plywood. Got a pattern out of a decoy book. They're pretty basic but got a few geese to come into them. Let us know what you do.

Hope I helped,

For snow geese some people use old white T shirts but if you are trying to hunt Canadas then I think it would be difficult to make decoys. One thing you can do is check websites for used silouhette decoys, they run much cheaper and can be just as effective as shells in some situations.

Start with some shells then work your way up it will take a while but watch sales, auctions, etc, but i started goose hunting with 5 shells and killed birds, now i have a group of buddies with whom we all contribute and share dekes. We have about 75 now.

In your position, I'd buy GHG shells.....they look great and are very affordable

If you have a Fleet Farm in your area they have some floating remington decoys for about 10 bucks a piece. the heads don't swivel or anything, but I think they look pretty good.

You can buy texas rag decoys very cheap. Make your own heads in different positions using plywood, partical board, corregated plastic etc.....

You get about 100 of the rags for about 25 bucks. They work well if used right and will get you by until you can save up for the others.

Well, you are in luck at this particular moment as it is election time and there are perfect goose decoys in nearly every yard in the nation, you just don't recognize them. The election signs are made of coroplast, basically plastic cardboard, and you can make silhouette decoys out of these very easily. Several decoy companies offer silos made from coroplast. Get some signs, cut them out like geese, and give them a simple paint job and you will have a great, cheap, start on a good goose spread.

Have fun and good luck.

i dont know how much $ ya would like to spend ... but outlaw makes "jenny" sils at a very reasonable price .... also the shells like was mentioned earlier are a great way to start out .... i know a guy here that on his first season out he was using black trash bags on dowel rods and killed birds ..... sounds goofy really but i know for a fact he killed birds ..... maybe get ya as many shells and or sils that ya can afford .... set them on the downwind side of the spread and fill in with rags or trash bags .... better yet ..... advertise in the local paper or post sumthin at the local sporting good stores .... tellin people your situation and ask if maybe ya could join a veteran goose hunter in ya area on sum hunts .... waterfowling is alot more fun with a person or two ... would learn alot more faster ...and may make sum great friendships .... if ya lived near me id have no problem takin ya out .... i take out new hunters every season ... i love watchin peoples eyes light up when they see birds cupped up and droppin into the dekes .... good luck to ya ... i hope everything works out for ya and ya have a great season .... keep me posted if ya would ... ya can contact me via e-mail at .....
