Swans?

Swans?
Hello, just wondering how many people hunt swans?
Here in Nevada there are 650 tags available every year to hunt the big birds, just wondering if there was anyone who hunts them or has hunted them in the past? What kind of techniques are used to hunt them? Is it like goose hunting? Duck hunting? Never hunted them before, but the application period ends the middle of September, and the season is October 16th January 5th of next year. That would give me plenty of time to hunt the birds with no problem.
Well, any advice on how to hunt the birds would be appreciated. Other waterfowl just does not look very promising this year, as there is not much water around where I live. I will mostly be able to hunt chukar, sage grouse, rabbits, and varmints such as jack rabbits, coyotes and crows this year.
Thanks for any help to come.

Charlie, can’t help you. I didn't know that swans were legal to hunt. I was always under the impression that swans were protected birds. In our province it’s illegal to hunt swans. You get caught hunting swans here and get ready to pay a fine.

I think there 2 or 3 different swans , there is tundra and mute at least . There is a swan that is consedered a farm animal that is not protected also ,it is nonnative brought in as a decoration . Some other states have a swan season ,I remember reading about a season in a east coast state.

The Swans that are hunted are Whistling Swans. The Trumpeter Swans are protected and after 5 are killed in one season, the season closes to protect them. The Whistling Swans primarily inhabit the west coast, and around the Chesapeake Bay area. I talked to one person, about it, and he said it is a lot like goose hunting. I guess I will just have to apply for a tag and see how I can do. The season is long enough to allow plenty of time to try for the birds several times and learn from previous hunts.
