Default 870 Wingmaster and steel shot

I was given a 870 wingmaster 2 3/4" but it is not machined out for different chokes all it has is improved cylinder. Question is can I use steel shot with this shotgun or is it worth the money to take it to a gunsmith to have it machined for the other chokes or would it be cheaper to buy a new barrel....

The 870 Wing master is a great gun and as for chokes, as long as it’s not full choke it should work just fine. That’s one good thing about the 870 is that you could get a number of different barrels but I would try the barrel first before spending any money on it. Try it out, you might like it just the way it is. Good luck....

I agree whole heartedly with Trailer. As for the improved cylinder, that 870 just might make a fine grouse.

Thanks trailer. I am new to duck hunting and bow hunting for deer in Ontario this year so I don't know a lot about shotguns. I grew up hunting moose and black bear in Newfoundland with the all time favorite newfie gun the 303 brittish. But I am realy excited about opening day for the big duck hunt... Thanks again for the reply

I have a Wingmaster and even if that choke doesnt work it is definatly worth either getting it machined or a new barrel. The Wingmaster is an awsome gun. It will last forever. I dont know what it costs to get it machined but a new barrel will run you somewhere between $200 and $300.

Big, just a note if you're not to familiar with shotguns is make sure you don’t use 3” shells. You might be aware of this but I thought I would mention it just in case. Make sure to bring the ducks nice and close because of the improved cylinder choke. Other then that have fun duck hunting.

Thanks for the replies. Yes trailer I do know not to use 3" shells in a 2 3/4" chamber Thanks for the help though trailer. Thanks Sharpshot_71 I called my local gunsmith and asked him about machineing this 870 and he said the same as you about the 870 lasting a long long time. and said he could machine it for around $35.00 but I need to buy the other chokes. So Is there any special name brand that makes good chokes. and what is the price range for chokes. This 870 is in mint condition only use for 1/2 duck season and still looks new, so I would hate to put any cheap brand chokes on this shotgun.

Remchokes are the ones I use on my 870. They cost around $20.00 each in Canada, so my guess is around $15.00 each in the U.S.

Thanks rbduck. I am going to see if my sporting good store has them. I have to drop this 870 off to the gunsmith first thing in the morning to get machined. Thanks again. I'm sure I will have more questions to ask soon...
