Default Which Jon Boat??

Hello,

I'm new hear and wanted to say Hey first of all. You all seem to be a great group. I'm a wafterfowler from MN and I also am the maker of Screamin' Suzie Mallard Calls.

I am in the market for a new duck boat and am looking at 14 and 15 footers. Can anyone give me there opinion for the mod.-V vs. normal Jon boat. I haven't ridden in either so don't have much knowledge. This boat will also be used for fishing in the summer.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Mod V's seem to be a little nicer on the rough water (mississippi) but it isn't like a night and day difference, it could make fishing with a front mount trolling motor a little better though.

A boat I've been looking at recently is Xpress. Check them out. Wide, stable, roomy, all the extras, plus they are already fully camo and covered in that spray-on truck bed liner stuff. Very cool and could be a big help with slippery muddy boots and for clean-up after the hunt.

My choice would be a 16-17 ft with console drive, 35-50 hp 4 stroke short shaft.

I am an outfitter in Canada and have used both types. The flat bottom is the type I prefer because it has a flat serfice to stand on in the front of the boat. Only the very front slopes down a little. The Mod V slopes in 3 different directions, making it very unsafe with a hunter in the front once it gets a little muddy and slippery.
Cons with the flat...
The flat bottom is terrible however if you plan on being in any wavy situation as it acts more as a plow rather than cutting the waves like the v bottom does. The flat bottom does not turn as easy and when going into weed clumps for cover the flat bottom goes over all the weeds (loosing some of you're cover) where as the Mod v pushes everything out to the sides.
The Mod V would probly be the boat for fishing and a better all aroud one however as I said with the added stability on the front end and the safety thing, I have been going with the flat bottom.
I hope this helps.

Go with the 15 footer and get as wide a boat as you can.

My brother and I just bought a tracker boat for duck hunting here in Oregon and all we do is hunt the rivers and bays and this boat rides nice and smooth over some pretty choppy water [link]http://www.trackerboats.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.boat&nav=15&boat=1107[/link] and you can get them in just the plane old green an do your own cammo job. thats what we are doing and got the boat for a considerable cheaper price.
