I've hunted with a Browning BPS with 3 inch chamber, 28 inch barrel with screw-in chokes for 22 years and haven't noticed the need for 3.5 inch shells. I use mostly 2.75 inch shells with bismuth or tungsten shot with 3 inchers reserved for high pass shooting.

Bottom ejection is a plus, making it easy to gather up empties for reloads and being a lefty, I don't have to worry about empties flying across my field of view.

Others have posted good advice, consider it in relation to the hunting you plan to do and if possible, go to your nearest gun range and check out the different shotties available. Ask your friends if you can try their shotties at the range before you make your decision.

Good luck to you and have a great hunting season this fall.

I have been a 870 lover/owner for all of my life. I have had nothing but 870's and I still have several of them for diifrent game that I hunt. Two years ago my son bought a Benelli Nova for goose/duck hunting. He said that this weapon handled better than the new 870 Super Mag that I just purchased for goose hunting. I gave it a try and I hate to admit but the 870 was for sale and got what I paid for it Plus. I fell in love with the Nova. The action and the handling surpasses the 870 by a long shot.

I have the Winchester SX2 and my duck hunting buddy has the benelli. What a difference. I can get off three shots, drop 2 ducks while he is waiting for his to cycle the second round. I really don't know if he just got a bad one or what but he has had problems with that gun anytime the temps drop below about 40 degrees. He has had the spring replaced and cleans it every trip. He still insists that it is the best. I just always get more ducks then him. I hope he never changes to an SX2. I like the extra ducks to shoot at.

I am surprized nobody has mentioned the rem 1187 l/w. or a barretta 390a. The two most reliable shotguns I have owned to date. I also own a pintail es100 barretta and owned a benelli super black eagle. The inersha system always jams up for some reason on both these guns. The benelli sometimes discharges the spent round and the new round when firing 2 3/4 loads. They probably reload quicker than the above 2. (I haven't noticed). But at the price of reliablity. I sold the SBE to my cousin. Who loves it.

I have both Benelli M1 and then I was in the Dakotas hunting snows. The nw wind that blew through the fields in 10 minutes my Benelli M1 would not cycle. I ended up with a single shot 10 gauge the rest of the day. When I got home went a purchased a Nova. Excellent gun for the cost! The 3.5" may not be needed for many things but its nice to have just in case. Even if your not on a budget check out that gun. Its a worth while pump! Good Luck!
