.410 performance?
Hello my northern friends.I am an Aussie and want to know if my .410 with 3" no. 4 shot is o.k for a duck or pidgeon or fox to about 20 yards. It has a fairly tight pattern and shoot s high at that range. Please help as i am considering buying a 12 ga. side by side . Thanks for your time.[:-]

RE: .410 performance?
get the 12 gauge.
the the 410 vs 12ga sxs is like comparing an indoor 5kilogram lap dog to a 40kg dingo in a dogfight. sig.... WHERE WOMEN GO AND MEN PLUNDER |
RE: .410 performance?
I could maybe see pushing the 410 to 20 yard pigeons, but you are going to run into trouble if you try to go after ducks with it. It is not even close to the same class as a 12 guage.

RE: .410 performance?
and in this country you must use non-toxic loads for ducks, which I'm not even sure if they make for a 410:eek:

RE: .410 performance?
they make bismuth in .410 shells, at least they did 2-3 years ago when i looked. $30/box of 25 3" #4 +shipping.
i passed. |
RE: .410 performance?
bismuth is the only non toxic i know of. I would seroiusly use a larger bore especially for ducks. I like my 20 gauge for an all around gun, but when i get really seroius about waterfowl the Nova comes out!!!!

RE: .410 performance?
STRUTH A 410!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!mmm Id go4 da 12 gauge. In therory you can get more positive kills with a 410 due to the long string of shot!!however because ur shot is in a long line and not in a cloud it is much easyer to miss or clip n injure a bird. Ducks being very strong birds are easily injured opposed to droped.
MATE GET THE 12Bore (it'll work out cheaper on rounds!!) Tomy D I come from the land up n right a bit (England) |
RE: .410 performance?
Yeah I'd definately go with the 12 gauge.

RE: .410 performance?
I have a Mossberg .410, and i only use it for rabbits and doves. In my opinion a .410 is to small for ducks.

RE: .410 performance?
depends where your hunting! small ponds are ok if the birds are coming right in. i've used a win. mod 42 .410 on puddle ducks and never lost a one!
don't try to strectch it though! |
