Hybrid Mallard?

Went out to the duck blind on sunday afternoon after a morning deer hunt...was a slow day but scored this awesome and what I believe is a hybrid mallard. Has anyone ever seen one like this or know more about it?

From what I can see, you should have shown it on its back and from the back as well, it looks like a young drake that is still pushing adult feathers.

I guess thats certainly possible, but it was a large duck in size IMO to be a young drake. I have heard of ‘intersex’ females - a female with low levels levels of estrogen, the hormone responsible for the development of female secondary sex characteristics before and someone suggested this to me the day of the hunt. It's at the taxidermist now so hopefully he can give me some insight and feed back as well. Thanks man!!!

Eclipse phase drake mallard.
They don't have to be young to be in eclipse phase of color.

Are you sure you want to spend money to get a bird in poor plumage mounted?

Very good point....but that was my first bird of the day and first bird ever as I am still new to waterfowl hunting. Probably sounds stupid, but I have mounted all my first kills and my buddy knows the taxidermist and he is only charging $140 which I thought was a really good price. Making me reconsider now, but it is still my first duck harvest ever so now I am torn! SO is it poor plumage or an eclipse phase? Like I said I am still new to waterfowl hunting as I have been a very dedicated big game and turkey hunter for the last 10 years... so any and all insight and knowledge I can gain is much appreciated! Def lots to learn!

Save your money for a good specimen, mallards are a dime a dozen anyway, there are many more secies. Good luck, waterfowling can hook you bad.

It'll make an interesting mount. Remember, you only get one first duck.
