Early duck hunting questions.
 

Does anyone have any good tips or tricks to have a successful early season duck hunt? Also which calls with a decent price would be the best for a feed call or hail call etc? For my final question does anyone know if Kankakee State Park a good place for waterfowling?

I have a few tips for you. First, identify the key areas to hunt. Also, match your decoys to the specie of duck you will be hunting and lastly, match your surroundings. Good luck on your hunting!

Preseason scouting will be your best friend. pay attention to patterns and how they react to weather. As far as calls go, everyone blows calls differently. Which means that each call will sound somewhat different and react differently on a per hunter basis. The most important thing to remember is sometimes no call is the best call, how often do you hear a duck actually hail call? A few things to keep in mind.

First of all, learn to identify ducks in the air before you shoot at them. Next scout areas where you want to hunt to see if it is worth while setting up there. Next, get years of experience under your belt before you call yourself a waterfowler, then enjoy yourself. There is no magic bullet that anyone can give you.

oldtimr has a point, spend some time pre-season watching different areas. one of the other things i like to do, is keep a hunting journal. It helps me remember when and where i shot birds and what the weather was like. The other extremely important point oldtimr made is to learn how to ID birds.
