Default Who's wood duck hunting this season?

The 18th will be here in no time.

Where you hunting?

I've got a pond with some flooded timber and there's about 20 or so that roost on it and a few more that come in throughout the day. Gonna try to sneak in and get a few opening morning when they fly off roost. I'm gonna start keeping an eye on the pond and seeing what times they're coming in.

Any tips for hunting roost ponds?

I will be in Oct.

As right now we have early goose and teal
But those go out the 15 th and 22 of Sept

I live in Ohio
I hunt close to Lake Erie most of the time
Real close to Ottawa National Refuge

BTW I have 112 Woodduck boxs I put up and take care of each year
So I help produce the Woodies

IMO the place to hunt isn't the roosting ponds
As you will scare them away

Hunt along a creek or river where you have passing shots
IMO a easy way to hunt them

+1 on not hunting the Roost!! Find their flight path and just intercept them along the way. They are usually easy to pattern and are on time. Usually a couple minutes after legal shooting time in the morning and right before it ends in the evening.

Hunting it just one morning of the season shouldn't spook them to bad should it?

I've heard to sneak in before daylight and get upwind from them and theyll fly your way? Is this correct? I'm gonna start watching over the pond morning and evening to try and see if there's a spot I can intercept them or figure out where they're going and ask to hunt there. But most of the times ive seen them flying off or to the pond they were flying higher than shooting range.

I was out dove hunting this past weekend over a cut corn field and there was a flooded spot in the corn with so many woodies on it you couldn't even see the water. I'll definitely be there opening morning.

Good luck to you guys.

And johnch, aware me on the wood duck boxes.. Are they easy to make and maintain?

Id really love to make some and put them up and try to get more ducks. I'd get more enjoyment out of that than I would shooting them.
