Favorite waterfowl combo
I am mostly an upland bird hunter, and really enjoy watching fine pointing dogs in the field. If I asked this question for peasants it would be an O/U Rizzini choked cyl/imp.cyl with 1 1/4 oz Rem copper plated 5s. Since I am planning on a couple of trips to the Dakotas this fall for combo upland and waterfowl hunting I thought I would ask some of the experienced waterfowl hunters what is their favorite gun and load for ducks or geese over decoys ?
Good hunting this fall. |
RE: Favorite waterfowl combo
i stick with the same load for the whole year, kent 3.5" 1 3/8 oz of #2 @1550fps out of a LM choke in a SBE.
keep the same chokes in your O/U, and shoot some high velocity steel. kent, win supreme, estate are all good brands. go with a lighter payload and higher velocity over a heavier payload and slower velocity. if you go with non steel non tox non inexpensive; kent matrix and hevi shot are quite popular. i think you' ll want a mod and full if you shoot the matrix. |
RE: Favorite waterfowl combo
I go with the SBE as well but use mostly 3" for ducks and 3.5" for geese. Every now and then I' ll sneek in a few 3.5" on ducks. I switched from BB to #2 last year and found that it was better for me. I use mostly Drylok but plan to try a few others this season.

RE: Favorite waterfowl combo
Personally, I shoot an IC to LM choke with #3 3" 1 3/8 oz high velocity Kent Fasteel at ducks and go to 3 1/2" BBs on geese and open the choke to the IC. I' m shooting a Beretta Xtrema.
In my O/U, I shoot Colonial' s IC and M steel-shot extended tubes loaded w/the same duck load I listed above. |
RE: Favorite waterfowl combo
I only use Winchester Drylox, for geese 3 1/2 BB and for ducks 3" #2' s.
