Have my forcing cone lengthend?
I have a Winchester super x2. Should I have the forcing cone lengthend? (not sure on the spelling on lengthend.) If so, what benefit does this have. I love this gun, and I want it to be the ultimate waterfowl gun.
Thanks

The benefit is that the pellets keep their form when shot and you should get a better pattern. When the forcing cone is lengthen, the pellets are not compressed into the barrel as much as the standard forcing cone. It also give a little less recoil. Not much. I had my Beretta done but never checked the pattern. I will some day. I hope this help you out.

RE: Have my forcing cone lengthend?
Lengthened forcing cones are all the rage right now. And, it' s one of those things that people seem to feel strongly about on both sides - like overboring, porting, recoil of high pressure vs low pressure loads, etc. My personal opinion is that long forcing cones don' t give an advantage. On the other hand, I do like porting - which many do not.
I have a couple of guns that have factory " long forcing cones" , but the gun I own that shoots the best long range patterns does not. It has a standard 12ga (.729" ) bore. It does, however, have custom made choke tubes that were matched to the bore dimension.
If you do decide you want to have the forcing cones done, be sure to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing. One thing is for sure - a poorly done job can trash a barrel.

Thanks for the help. I also thought about getting my X2 Angle Ported. There is a company on the internet named Angleport that does this. I wonder if this will help me knock down more birds this season? This company also lengthens forcing cones. I dont know if its worth it or not.

Unless you' re trying to tweak the pattern for just a little bit extra, I' d skip the lengthening the cone. The tightest pattern in the world won' t knock a bird down if it' s not on target.

RE: Have my forcing cone lengthend?
Why not buy a gun with the proper cone lenght like a Beretta 391? My brother had the same thought a while back with his Browning. I talked him into selling the Browning, taking that money and the money he would of spent at the smith' s and buying a Beretta for a little more. I don' t off hand know what the lenght of the cone in your guns are, but most shotguns are 1/2" , 1 1/2" is about optimum and there is no guarantee the smith will ream it straight.
