My first thought was merganser too. But after looking at a few pictures of them I never really found anything that looked similar. Maybe this is a young female, and thats why it didn't look like any of the pictures I found? If it is a hen hooded merganser, the one I shot that we never recovered was probably a male. And from the looks of it, that'd be a hell of a bird to lose. :/

male hoods are really pretty but yes im pretty sure that looks like a hen merganser...

It defiinitely looks like a hen merganser. If you said it was small, i could be a hen hooded merganser cuz they are the smallest of all the mergansers. Mergansers can get pretty dang big.

Hen Hooded Merganzer =

Soak the breasts in the orange juice over night - really not bad table fare.

And the drake is really one or the handsomeness ducks out there.

mabee a gadwell or a grey duck of maybey even a wring bill that the color on the bill didnt come all the way in

Merganser !!! no question. I've shot lots over the years. They make great training birds for my dog.
