Geese-what to aim at?
Considering their size, do you guys aim for wings, head/neck or just try to get the right lead and let the shot hit where it may?
Since seeing some videos & pics of Snow geese (" sky carp" as a TX friend calls ' em) I' ve kinda been interested. |
RE: Geese-what to aim at?
I think the most effective shot is when you get the right lead that your pattern pretty much blankets the bird. That way to get more effective killing shots and less wounded birds that you or your dog have to run down.
Pattern your gun before going out so you know your effective range. You can make cut-outs in the shape and size of a flying goose. Shoot at them from a number of distances and count the pellets that hit at each distance. Then you can see the pellet spread at each range and how many will be hiting the bird at each given range if it is in the spread pattern. |

I lead the bird so that my shot pattern is centered for the head/neck region. I' ve yet to lose a bird and don' t wind up with swiss cheesed goose. My gun is a Browning Citori O/U 12 ga. with 26 inch barrels choked modified and improved cylinder.

RE: Geese-what to aim at?
I do alot of goose hunting and i have had my share of wounded birds and flat out misses.. i like to use the 4 B' s technique that works the best for me...
1. Butt 2. Breast 3. Beak 4. BOOM when i raise to shoot i start my swing from the rear end of the bird and when i get to the beak i keep swinging and then shoot... lots of more kill shots than wounding shots... good luck to you |
RE: Geese-what to aim at?
I do the exact same as the above post, swing from rear and right through the bird, pick up the bill and boom. The key to successfully wing shooting any bird is follow through and now how much lead is required for the bird in which your hunting.

RE: Geese-what to aim at?
if it is flying at me i shoot at the beak and swing throw and if it is flying away i shoot at the wings so it will at least all down i use a mossberg 835 3 1/2 with f`s and it takes them down easy i also reload them so they go faster
