beginners question

This is going to be my first year of goose hunting. I usually only bowhunt deer and I am going to try goose hunting this year. I have a place that is a wood line and there is a pond on the west side and on the north side and they are loaded with geese, and they fly right over me when I am in my treestand. My wife just bought me a new 870 Remington supermag 12 ga. and I am wanting to try it out. Do you guys think if I bought some decoys and place them in the cut bean field that they would come in? I have never seen them land in the field but they are all over the ponds and they always fly over the field. Also will the 3" shells work or should I get the 3.5? I am new to duck/geese hunting so any tips please tell me.

They may very well sit down on it. I'm assuming this is private. I would give it a shot, if it fails you can always sit along the cattails and reeds along the pond.

should be ok 3in works well for geese try a mod chocke tube and black cloud bb .good luck

I would just sit on the pond...if there already going there.but decoys could work if you know how to call.

the ponds are owned by someone else. I am right in the middle.

If they dont like the dekes you can always pass shoot them if they are flying low enough

Are they comming to the pond in the morning or evening. If it's the morning, I'd set out a dozen or two shell decoys in groups of 3 to 8 as close to the property line as you can. Spread the groups out some to make them look relaxed. If it's evening, I'd keep them in tighter groups and hope they drop a little lower for a good pass shot.

As for you're gun. It's a fine gun for what you want to do.

3 in would definately work id use BB or bigger 3.5 in has a bigger payload that would work better but what ever u want to buy will work as long as the pellet size is sufficient

First of all, congrats on your new gun. It is a very nice gun and if you take care of it, it will always serve you well.

I would recommend shooting 3in shells. I *think* your gun came with a mod choke which will work fine. The 3.5 shells would perhaps work better if you are just shooting them as they pass, but you will wish that you had shot the 3's in the morning.

The best thing you can probably do is go buy some goose shells and set up a dozen of them. You'll want a goose call and the goozilla is a very good cheap call. Many people will tell you to start on a long reed call, however there are tons of videos on youtube that will teach you how to blow a short reed call (and not many for the long reed call).

You'll need to conceal yourself as geese aren't dumb. Many people use blinds, however when i started I used camo burlap and covered it with corn stalk.

Here's what I would suggest to get you started:

Unfortunately its a very expensive time of year to start hunting. however, In the long run, its worth every penny :-).

Best of luck and feel free to get a hold of me with any questions.
