IMHO I would sugjest going with a pump like a Super Nova by benelli. but if you have your heart set on an auto the i would hav to agree with swamperfrog and go with with a SBE or 11-87.

I bought a Benelli M2 last year and have absolutely ZERO complaints about it. While it's going to be above your price range, it is well worth the money knowing that you're getting a gun that will (if properly maintained) be shooting for many many years. The SBE can shoot a 3 and 1/2" shell, the M2 cannot. That it the only difference. 28" barrel in camo finish....loving it.

To each their own. I would recommend to a beginner to buy a cheap pump shotgun. Pumps are super reliable and considerably cheaper than automatics. You will learn something about the beating that a waterfowl gun gets when hunting waterfowl (you did say you were a beginner, right?), and after this you may more carefully consider whether you want a more expensive, more complicated shotgun in the marsh or in the duck boat.

I have used a 20ga 2 3/4" 1100 definitely a good gun. i just bought a 12ga 3 1/2" I haven't gotten to hunt with it yet.

I agree with Alsatian..... stick with a good pump... 870 Remington or 500 series Mossberg... cheap and reliable....
