tips for controlling kick

RE: tips for controlling kick
Lets see... there are many ways to control kick. Add more weight to the gun. The more the gun weighs, the less recoil there will be. Also, recoil pads such as remingtons new "super cell" and Sims Vibration Laboratory Recoil pads should reduce the kick. Another way to reduce kick would be to get a gas operated semi auto... but you have an 870. What I did was i just got used to the kick. Also, recoil is much less noticable when your adrenaline is pumping. Either that or get a smaller gun.

Couple of ways
Lighter recoiling loads
Go from a 3" 1 1/4 oz load to 3" 1 1/8 oz or even better to a 2 3/4" 1 or 1 1/16 oz fast load
Increase the weight of the gun
Lead in the butt stock
And or replacing your duck plug with a lead rod
I made several of them years back by filling capped 3/8" copper tubeing with lead and cutting it to length
Tapper the ends
Change to a gas gun , 11/87 , 935 Ect
As a gas gun has a lower FELT recoil
A better recoil pad as listed above
Or a in shirt or strap on pad
Add a bunch of practice and you should be in good shape

RE: tips for controlling kick
Ported chokes wont help recoil...Changing the recoil pad and/or adding weight is the only way to reduce felt recoil cheaply. Knoxx Ops makes a shock absorber type stock for the 870. Shooting a lighter non-magnum load will reduce actual recoil. The shoulder pads tend to help but they really dont since they affect gun fit.

RE: tips for controlling kick
i shoot an 870 with 3" 1-1/4 or 1-3/8 loads. I dont hold the gun too tight to my shoulder. Let the recoil pad do the work. After a few days of really shooting, i get a little tired, but not too bad. I'm not too big of a guy, only 155 lbs and handle it well. The new Super Cell from Remington should help. I have a Hi-Viz recoil pad on my 700 in a 7 rem mag, my girl shoots it with no problems! Just a few tips, hope it helps!!

Not holding the gun tight is the worst thing you could do. That allows the gun to accelerate before it hits your shoulder! Not only do you have the recoil from the shell being fired hitting your shoulder you now have the shell plus the gun's mass. The recoil pad softens the blow by slowing down the gun. If it starts out not moving(tight to your shoulder) thats lessthe padhas to stop.
