RE: What time of the year for wood duck boxes?
Localy we put them out in late winter
As everything is frozen solid
We use a ATVs and sleds to haul the posts , boxs ect around
We drill a hole with a ice auger and drive in the post
Normaly use a step ladder on the ice to hang the box on the post
If hanging boxs in trees , the ice makes hauling a extension ladder easyer
And the boxs are there waiting for the Woodies to return
I maitain 30 of my own woodduck boxs and our hunt club has between 250 and 300 out
We move about 10% of the boxs every year , down from 25% 15 years bach
If not used for 2 springs , it gets moved
We also add new boxs every year

I'm pretty sure the best time to put out wood duck boxes would be late winter/early spring. I read somewhere that as woodies migrate, they are constantly scouting out potential nests for the future. So, they could see your box as they are leaving, and potentially take your box as they return.
