Muck bottom decoy dilemma
 

Hey there fellow duck hunters, ive got a problem that i'm sure at least a few of you have encountered in the past and was hopin i could get some great advice from an even greater group of people. I'm a low-budget college student with no boat and no dog (only fish allowed in the dorms) and i found what i like to think is the honey holes of all honey holes for duck hunting, and its only a half hour from school. Its a long pond about 100-150 yards long by about 15-20 yards wide, with 4 grassy knolls along the side, equally spread along the northern edge, perfect for backdrops for yours truly and 3 of my hunting buddies, but heres my problem, i scouted it out a couple weeks ago and found out the bottom is thick sloppy MUCK! there's no way i'd be able to walk in there to retrieve my decoys or even ducks for that matter. Our season opens on saturday and a couple of friends and i r goin out monday to avoid the rush, and i can only think to bring a fishin pole and musky lure to retrieve my ducks and deeks. Any advice? I just got a new quiver butt duck and cant wait to see how much it livens my spread in the calm waters of that pond. Thanks everybody!

From the way your describing this pond, sounds like you need a small flat bottom boat or a canoe. You want something light and can be transported easy. How deep is the water?

Took the words out of my mouth. :DI know people that use canoes to retrieve their decoys and to get across muddy dikes and canals. a 10 - 12 foot aluminum john boat would also do fine. Just look around and you can find some for crack prices. A buddy of mine got a 14 ft aluminum john boat for just 100 dollars. Its a little leaky, but you cant beat that.

buy a rubber-raft possibly? you should be able to find them fairly cheap

Same situation here. My solution.

Telescoping rod and reel of powerpro braid to long cast....heavy spinnerbait/buzzbait to retrieve with. Long casts are necessary to snag/retrieve birds and just let it sink for a second upwind/upstream of a decoy and you will usually get the decoy line.

Make a Lure out of a 8" section of broomstick
Add big trebble hooks on all 4 sides

If you are decent with a fishing pole
You should be able to retreive your ducks

BTW make sure the ducks are DEAD
