smelly black lab
 

ive got a black lab about a year old that i use for duck and goose hunting and it has aquired a horrible stinch to it. Does anyone have suggestions to get rid of this smell. please let me know.

This is a pretty common problem with my 4 labs,,I got this advice from a friend of mine and it really works,,,,and best of all it is cheap !!!

The reason (especially) labs smell, is because with thier dense coat and thier frequent visits with water!!:D the coat tends to be a breeding ground for bacteria,but as we all know bathing a lab too much breaks down the water repellent oil found in thier coat anyway,,,,,,,so here is the solution,,,,,Rinse them off with regular tap water and then completely drench them in a solution of 2 pints vinegar mixed with 2 gallons of water,,,I promise they wont smell like vinegar!! DO NOT rinse them off after you have applied the water/vinegar solution,, For a quick fix you can mix (about half and half) a spray bottle full of water and original forumula Listerine,, spray them with it and then rub it in!!

Hope this helps, it will work ,,trust me I have 4 labs that love water and then LOVE to crash in my house!! So they HAVE to smell good! ;)

Sometime there skin can be over grown with yeast giving a odd smell. May want to ask your Veterinarian. There is some special shampoo' s for it. Watch those ears too (breeding ground for yeast)!

I use tomato juice as a bath. Scrub good then rinse.[:@]

We use Fleecy Liquid Fabric Softener(no joke) to get rid of the smell when our dogs have been sprayed by a skunk.......works like a charm.....so I see no reason why it won`t work for your problem. Just pour it on, rub in, rinse off. The guys in our local dog club have been doing this for years, they even carry jugs of the stuff when hunting. Hope this helps.

You should probably visit your local vet. If the dog has only recently aquired this odor it is likely and ear infection or a skin infection. The fabric softeners and other recipies may take the smell away but won' t fix the problem. I would say an ear infection would be most likely, these are very common in labs and if left untreated can cause rupture of the eardrum along with permanant nerve damage. They are also very uncomfortable for the dog. Mange is another common problem that will lead to a very foul odor in a hurry, there should be hair loss associated with that though.
