RE: Hybrid Mallard?
it has the bill and head shape of a widgeon
|
RE: Hybrid Mallard?
Its a recessive trait. Just like blue eyes in people. Just not as common in ducks. Its still 100% mallard.
FWIW.... Wigeon have MUCH shorter beaks. The head shape and beak size/shape are all true to a mallard. |
RE: Hybrid Mallard?
Yes, it definately has the bill and head of a mallard, thanks for the comments. Dean

RE: Hybrid Mallard?
ORIGINAL: kingvjack Ive never seen a crossed duck, I was gonna say it was an old duck, but what swamp said is good enough for me. Mule Duck! Here you go... here is a Mule Duck (Mallard/Pintail) (the file was too large to cut/paste into the thread. Note the darker green head, blue/grey bill, red/orange feet, the duck has a sprig, but its curling up like a mallard's tail feathers curl. The duck also has a white neck ring, but as you can see, it sort of starts to run up toward the head like the white patch on a sprig would. This one isn't really a pretty specimen. I've seen them with grey feet also. They are actually extremely pretty. There was a thread up in the taxidermy section of the duck hunters refuge. One of the bigtime bird taxi's in the country posted up some of the hybrids from his collection. He had Woodies/pintails, buffleheads/goldeneyes, Cinnemon Teal/Bluewing Teal, Bluewing teal/ shovelers, Mallard/redhead, mallard/gadwall (brewers duck). Really neat stuff. |

Never seen one... oh well, first time for everything I guess...

RE: Hybrid Mallard?
So how do you count a bird such as the mallard/pintail towards your daily bag limit? mallard or pintail?
|
RE: Hybrid Mallard?
well on my card it reads a bunch of different duck and goose names then there is a spot for 'other' we hunt a refuge and one time a guy got type of teal the there are only 300 left, in the rainforest, the Warden found out what it was, reported that he got it and handed it back to him cause it wasnt a protected duck in America so it counted as 1 of 7 that the guy could shoot, he could of filled his bag with them leagally

RE: Hybrid Mallard?
You know why it's blue???
He didn't pay his bill - yuk-yuk-yuk! I'll stop... Sorry!:) |
RE: Hybrid Mallard?
I would bet that it is a mallard/pintail crossed back to a mallard. Some mallard/ pintailare mules and can't reproduce but some can. Only a DNA test could verify this.

RE: Hybrid Mallard?
Definetly a Mallard. The blue bill situation I have heard of before from other hunters that shoot alot of mallards. Rare either way though.
